Pelini was at LSU with Miles.

Dantonio was a DB coach for Saban, and stayed at MSU after Saban left.

Jimbo Fisher is the only other coordinator of any significance.

Hiring K. Smart is not a route UT needs to go. I'll just leave it at that.

EDIT: Incorrectly listed J.Fisher as DC.

Here's a name that I haven't seen mentioned...Todd Grantham DC at UGA. I'm not saying for us necessarily, but does anyone see him getting a look at one of these open HC positions? A defensive-minded coach with NFL ties...just throwing it out there for thoughts. If we had to take an unproven HC by picking a coordinator, I think I would rather go this route versus Kirby Smart.

I don't really see it. Few have done so little with so much in recent memory. that defense is stacked with talent, but have 2-3 stinkers every year.

Grantham doesn't really seem like the guy you would want over your team. JMO.

If we are going to take a coordinator, I'd want Greg Roman. He is the OC for the 49ers and has experience in college and in the pros. He runs a pro style offense that will run the football but is very multiple.

Pelini and D'antonio if I'm not mistaken.

Pelini doesn't look real hot at Nebraska right now. D'antonio learned a lot about running a team from the sweater vest.

Muschamp learned as much about defense from Tubberville as he did under Saban. Calling him a Saban student is kinda iffy these days. In an interview Muschamp said he didn't like Saban at all.

Dantonio wasn't a DC for saban at MSU. I don't think Pelini ever worked for him.

Mark Dantonio had an impressive resume before and after Saban as an assistant coach. Will Muschamp also had proved himself as a coordinator after Saban. Neither of them are career "Saban guys" like Smart is.

SN: just realized I replied to the wrong poster.

Yep. Both of these guys did a lot without Saban before becoming head coaches.

A poster previously said it:

Next year is a pretty rough schedule. If we lose certain people to the draft, it will almost certainly look like this year's win loss record. If you are dealing with another coordinator with his first HC job, there is little he can sell himself on to show that he has what it takes. Recruiting could remain behind the 8 ball... fans still disillusioned... The BOT needs to get their crap in order, and Hart has to nail this hire.

Smart hasn't had an opportunity to prove himself away from Saban b/c he's only 35 years old. He doesn't have a good enough resume to deserve the HC job for us IMO. We need to make a bigger move than that. Plus if we go with Smart he'll always have an eye on Athens.

SIAP - From Rivals

Nay or Bray?

Being a four-star recruit and the No. 7 overall pro-style quarterback in the 2010 class, Tyler Bray arrived at Tennessee with a great deal of fanfare. After enrolling early, Bray started the last five games of his freshman season and has been the starter since then.

Showing off NFL potential throughout his time in Knoxville, Bray put it all together on Saturday against Troy when he passed for 530 yards during a shootout victory. This yardage total broke a Tennessee record and was only 14 yards short of the all-time SEC record set by Eric Zeier of Georgia 19 years ago.

As a recruit, Bray first caught everyone's attention with a big junior season that saw him pass for 2,624 yards and 26 touchdowns. During the summer before his senior season, Bray committed to San Diego State, but the Vols quickly offered after they missed out on Jesse Scroggins, who committed to USC.

Tennessee began to press the issue and after taking a visit to Knoxville in early September of his senior season, Bray de-committed from the Aztecs and gave his pledge to then-Vols coach Lane Kiffin.

Bray was ranked ahead of other signal-callers such as Tommy Rees and Sean Mannion, and behind other players such as Blake Bell, Phillip Sims and Jake Heaps, none of whom made the impact he did in what was considered a very poor quarterback class.

Scroggins ended up flaming out at USC and has since transferred. There was a consensus that Bray would have committed to the Trojans had he been offered. However, things have worked out much better for Bray in regards to playing time than they would have at USC with Matt Barkley in charge.

To our credit, we had Bray ranked much higher than any other recruiting website out there, despite offers from only the Vols, San Diego State and Fresno State.

Give yourself a pat on the back Rivals, you finally nailed one.

Things I want in a head coach:

1. Not from the Saban tree. I don't want him hanging out with our major rivals in the off season.

2. Doesn't think another SEC school is better than UT. No alums, etc..

3. Proven HC. If not at top level, at least have won at lower level. If you do come from a coaching tree, I prefer it to be from a Harbaugh type.

Looks like the Kiffister's recruits are exploring options. Safety Max Redfield already decommitted. From Rivals -

Nico Falah had all but written off Oregon after its coaching staff told the USC pledge earlier this season he could not visit if still committed to the Trojans, but that stance has changed. Falah said he will take a trip to Oregon later this month.

According to Falah, he talked with Oregon offensive line coach Steve Greatwood on Wednesday and it was decided that the four-star offensive tackle could now visit in two weekends for the Stanford matchup.

"It's going to be a good experience for me," Falah said. "I've never been to a school out of state so far. I've only been to the California schools. It's going to be pretty exciting for me to get the Oregon experience.

"I just want to get up there. Oregon is an option for me. As of now I'm all SC and I don't think that's going to change either."

Where do Lane and Ed go next? From si.com-

On the field, this team with unbeaten talent is 6-3 while gaining national recognition mostly for reckless penalties and questionable play-calling.

Off the field, Kiffin has dragged the team through an array of distractions and ethics dilemmas that have tarnished the athletic department’s sterling post-probation image cultivated by Athletic Director Pat Haden.

Kiffin was not hired by Haden, and there is now real doubt about his ability to keep his job beyond this season as the department sinks deeper into embarrassment. Kiffin was a Mike Garrett guy, and there are indications that Haden is ready to rid the program of the last traces of that legacy. As always, winning solves everything, and it appears Kiffin is going to have to do plenty of it in these final three regular-season games.

Like, maybe, win all of them?

He was a good recruiter for UT too before the season started. The problem is that UT has done terrible and his defense is terrible. We have been in it for some great defensive players before the season starts because of him, Carl Lawson is a perfect example.
yea a great recruiter before the season. He pulled bynum away from cincy.:salute:
