While attending camps is a big part of receiving a favorable ranking, it's not the only thing that matters. I would argue that the top 100-150 has more hits than misses once the player's college career plays out. I don't have research to validate that other than the fact that the schools that compete for a playoff spot consistently most likely have a average class ranking over the previous 3-4 years in the top 10-15.
I will generally agree; however, that the difference between the 8th ranked class and the 15th ranked class is relatively small (yet it is important to consider quality vs. quantity in these situations). The same can be said for the difference between the 15th ranked class and the 20th ranked class. One problem with that though is it ignores some context. For example, how does it compare to the other teams that you play each year?
It is silly to cite how USCjr beat UGA this year with less talent or Kansas St. beating Oklahoma. UGA sh** the bed on one day, sure. But, they also finished 11-1. How did they finish last year? That's what we are all striving for, right?
Noticed a lot of back and forth going on the last few pages. It's that time of year.
