Here’s a scenario that’s not getting nearly enough attention: What if half the country is ready to go full steam ahead with the season as scheduled, or close to it, while the other half isn’t ready to consider filling a stadium? Then what?
“This could lead to a culture war in college sports,” one longtime coach said.
That would be fascinating to watch unfold -- and Rutgers, because of its geography, would end up right in the middle of the firestorm. No major college program on the East Coast might be impacted more because of COVID-19 and the lockdowns nationwide.
The most realistic scenario for Rutgers might be a “spring” season that begins in the winter and gives everyone another six months for scientists to have a better understanding of the virus and possible treatments. Several other Big Ten programs, given news reports out of Michigan and Ohio, could face a similar situation.
Well, try selling that in Georgia, where Waffle Houses are already open for business, or Florida, where the beaches are starting to reopen. Try telling the folks at LSU that they won’t be able to defend their national title until May or June, or convincing the fine people in Alabama that a spring season is better because of ... RUTGERS?!
The lines already are getting drawn. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a radio interview on Thursday that a coronavirus lockdown someplace else wouldn’t stop his conference from playing this fall.
“If there’s a couple of programs that aren’t able (to play), does that stop everyone? I’m not sure it does,” Sankey said on 1010XL in Jacksonville.
Meanwhile, John Sharp, the Texas A&M system chancellor, “told all 11 university presidents in the system that they will reopen their campuses this fall and be ready to play sports,” according to the Texas Tribune.
Can anyone imagine such a blanket statement coming out of New Jersey in a couple weeks, or even months?
For now, the impact of the coronavirus in many southern states is just a ripple compared to the tsunami here. That might change.
But the importance of football won’t. They always say the four seasons in the South are winter, spring, summer and football. You think they’re going to postpone their favorite time of year because people up here aren’t ready to play ball?
Yeah. Not a chance.
