Still 1st quarter, 0-7 in the swamp. Just got a fumble recovery on Trask by Toots. This was just a couple plays after another freshman, Burrell, fell on a fumble by the sideline, but was ruled to have tapped the ball with one pinky toenail out of bounds. Typical UT luck. But we got it back anyway. Great 1st down run to set us up right outside the end zone. Now 2nd and goal from the 3. Time to even things up.

We got em right where we want em with this play call and Gray completely whiffs on the block. Otherwise Pope is high stepping into the end zone and the Gator crowd goes hush as we flex a little. All downhill from here. Time to turn it off.

I'm from Chattanooga and watched him play and then he came back to my high school and spoke to the student body...

You remember the Pro boxer Jay Bell from Chattanooga? He used to run in around Howard every day to train and when he saw my mom leaving work he would always walk her to her car since the housing projects were directly in front of Howard Elem and high school to make sure she was safe getting to her car and nobody bothered her. My mom never had any problems ever. Bell was a stand up person and good guy.

I’m sitting here reflecting on Johnny, and it brings me to probably the most polarizing topic of UT football for anyone over 35. Here’s the question I know everyone’s been asked:

“Are you a Johnny guy or a Phil guy?”

In this binary world that we live in (true especially today), you were almost forced to pick a side. Both sides had the perfect villain: a drunk in bad health who was polarizing to anyone around him or a scheming, backstabbing, coup leader whose only desire was to take control. In reality, neither absolute was true, but both men probably made a mistake or two they wish they could have back.

Isn’t it like that in our lives? We all have mistakes in our lives, yet we need forgiveness the same that we need to give forgiveness.

I never have been a Johnny guy or a Phil guy. It’s always saddened me to see and hear of the divide. Now we have a situation where it’s too late for reconciliation. In mourning the loss of Johnny, may we all do our best to look inside and see where you need forgiveness and seek ways to give forgiveness before it’s too late. Let this be our tribute to Johnny, yet with a far greater purpose in mind beyond just him.

I love when you do these because I am almost totally a visual learner, but that is depressing.

So the heat maps posted yesterday were pretty busy so I tried to come up with a "better picture" of what's actually going on. I think it's easier to see the movement up and down the ranks of the conference with this updated view. jmo.

I just used the heat maps from yesterday to “Power Rank” SEC units and teams on a year by year basis just looking at how the teams performed against in-conference opponents.

Couple of notes –
  • aside from coaching we were arguably the 2nd best team in the conference in 2015
  • in 2017 we had the worst team in the history of our program but statistically we were still better than Vandy according to this view
  • the 2014 class set us up for a huge jump once the 2015 class arrived – will the 2019 class augmented by the incoming 2020 class deliver similar results?
  • Our defense last year was as good as our defense in 2015 relatively speaking – we just need follow through this time and with a little luck that’s a good likelihood
  • While our offense was abysmal last year, it could’ve been worse and it was worse for some teams - relatively speaking, we were the least abysmal - lol
  • If we have what many expect this year, an elite defense or as a minimum, a good defense, imagine how good we'll be if we only have a bad offense. I don't even want to think about how good our team would be if we had an average offense. Everyone would dismiss me as being unrealistic and I wouldn't argue one bit.

Good stuff. The defense will be near elite in a year or so. My biggest fear is that we will not evolve on offense becoming like Florida pre Mullen. We must make sure we can put up points!!!!

i remember being very torn about the whole deal. i really liked majors, a lot. but i do recall being frustrated at how "stale" it seemed to get toward the end. and was really excited about what we saw from Fulmer when he was tapped as the interim.

my memory being jaded by time and experience, i do believe that while i was excited about Fulmer and his prospects as a HC.....a handful of games in one season wasn't really going to usurp 15 years and 3 conf titles, was it? i hated what that whole fiasco did to that season, cause it could have been a really special one.

i always wondered why Dickey didn't just put his foot down on what would happen if Johnny was able to come back healthy, or not. to me, even back then i remember feeling this way, it seemed the prudent thing to do would be to go with the status quo for that season, and evalute at the end of the season.

but i get it...hard to tell Johnny to "cool it, we'll talk in December".

in the end, i think you're right...i think both made errors in how it was handled...either one or both could have diffused the whole thing, pretty easily. and as acknowledged as Majors was for developing coaches, it was a perfect opportunity to set up the legacy and pass the torch (be it then or at some point in the near future).

anyway, water under the bridge now, Majors' legacy will remain intact and i'll always remember Majors very fondly, regardless. and FUlmer has cemented his legacy at UT as well.

i remember saying similar things about the OL headed in to last year....lol....i think the motto was "just don't suck out loud" and we might be ok this year?

lol.

feel the same about the QB headed in to this year....it just can't be a sh*t show like it was last year................can it be just "ok"?

Corner36 (Buck) has called Norvell a bad hire for awhile. Compared him to Butch Jones. Said he’s messing up badly on the recruiting trail in FL HS’s. Norvell won’t be there much longer. Multiple bad hires in a row for FSU. Sounds all too familiar. Hopefully their next hire is much better and helps make that conference more competitive.

Can you give some background on how he is messing up on the recruiting trail? I was hoping he does well to compete with Clemson and their cupcake schedule.

Coach Majors and Coach Fulmer did share a most important sentiment. An undying admiration and dedication of and to the university and Big Orange Country. We as fellow Vol fans and/or alumni can and should be thankful for that.

The narrative about Fulmer has also hurt his reputation to those outside the program. I keep hearing from outsiders that Fulmer was himself when he backstabbed Currie and derailed the coaching search. Most all of us know that we were ecstatic that Fulmer was named AD because it too power away from Haslam, who was using Currie as his pawn. That was the best result we could have gotten from Schiano Sunday, yet outsiders don't understand that.

I watched some Johnny coached teams, but my formative years were under Fulmer's first few years. Johnny is a legend, but I think hindsight suggests that the decision to hire Fulmer was correct. He led us on a stretch of successful years that many of us on here can attribute to why we watched UT football.

That's super cool and doesn't surprise me... yes, stand up guy for sure.

This would be his first full class and it’s currently ranked 22...was outside the 25 before last weekend. Reminder that this is Florida State not Florida International.

Does a fireman get called out for stabbing a fire in the back? Our program was going down in flames. What, if any, action Fulmer took doused the dumpster fire and saved our program.

I'm good.

Thanks you so much for bringing up such a painful subject. While you're at it why don't you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it?

No matter how strenuously they insist otherwise, opposing fanbases do not have our best interests at heart. If they’re selling a narrative? Don’t buy.

I agree, but that's not the narrative being told by some people outside the program. Some believe he purposely interfered with Currie trying to hire Leach and that he was making a move to get the AD job. I don't care what happened, we all know it was best for our program. But his previous "backstabbing" of Johnny was used to create a similar narrative.
