There's no decision to be made. Pruitt will be the coach of UT next year. All of this talk of Freeze or anyone else is just angry posters venting. The university is not going to fire Pruitt this year when they can claim COVID as an excuse. They're not going to eat that buyout this year. Just not going to happen. We, as fans, can bitch all we want, but Fulmer doesn't care what we think. The university admin does not care what we think. Pruitt will continue to be out head coach, so we might as well suck it up and accept it.
it was a looooong turn then int he case of jones. but there was more to it than that back then...i think under a more stable administrative environment, he'd of been fired then....Can't recall which poster it was (LWS maybe?) stated that a loss to Vanderbilt makes them turn on the coach.
Thank you LA, it was very tough but she's in a better place and dad has the freedom to live out his last days. I miss her and think of her often but know she's not suffering any longer.
I've/we've missed you. So glad you chose to post again. Please hang around.
They'll find enough fans for this season. A pandemic leading to limited seating will take care of that. Next year, fans with short memories and full of hope will return to Neyland Stadium. We'll see how he does next year. The absolute soonest we see a change is after next season, IMO. I don't see anything changing that.He may well still be coach, but there is no reason to accept it. The fans really need to not show.
Tennessee has already lost a generation of fans and watching the team get their teeth kicked in the next couple of years isnt going to help. Pruitt is in way over his head and is headed for one of the worst records in school history this year.
This is why UT shouldn't be the proving ground for coaches. Said it at the time of the hire. It's a huge gamble and seldom pays off.It isn't all on Fulmer. UT was in a tough spot the last time around. Fulmer has taken a lot of the fundraising, PR and donor stuff off Pruitt's plate-- he does a lot more than most ADs would do, and he's very good at it. And UT has spared no expense hiring experienced assistants and a large admin staff. In three years, Pruitt should have learned to be a decent CEO who can delegate effectively to a staff he hand-picked to work with him. Personality, temperament, personnel management and leadership are all part of the HC job. If a guy isn't a natural, he'd better learn fast, especially at a high-profile program with the passion and expectations of UT.
I thought that if nothing else we would have an elite defense. Then if he could just manage to get the OC hire right we would be okay. I was wrong. Our defense is terrible. He can't manage the defense and be a HC at the same time, clearly. He also hasn't hired a good OC. So we just aren't good anywhere. This is why UT shouldn't be the proving ground for coaches. Said it at the time of the hire. It's a huge gamble and seldom pays off.
Hope everyone is well. @InVOLuntary someone on the board told me about about your mother. I was so sorry to hear that. What a tough road that was--for her and your family.
For anyone who cares-- Pruitt was hired with the implicit agreement that he would be given five years. There was consensus that UT couldn’t afford to make another coaching change in less than five years and that the new HC needed five years to rebuild a badly damaged program. Pruitt was Fulmer’s guy, and his hiring came with the expectation-- and assurance-- that Fulmer would use his experience to help Pruitt scale the learning curve, and together they could return UT to respectability within five years. If not, then UT would be recruiting well and be in a good position to make the necessary changes.
Pruitt wasn’t ready for a job as big, difficult and demanding as UT’s. Being a great DC doesn't make him good enough at the many facets of the HC job and he won’t be good enough for a while, if ever. Many donors and board members felt that UT should hire an experienced HC for a massive rebuild with high expectations and an impatient fanbase. Fulmer went way out on a limb for Pruitt, and UT unified behind him. Pruitt has been a disappointment and he’s a divisive personality. He’s pissed off a lot of people, so UT is no longer unified.
The easy solution is what needs to be done eventually is best done immediately. But Sexton negotiated a sweetheart deal for Pruitt, and Fulmer doubled down. Fulmer is tied to Pruitt, so don’t expect him to do anything except publicly stand behind this coaching staff. And don't expect a lot of donors to be okay with that.
Buying out assistants with longer-term contracts would be throwing money at the wrong solution. Either fix the problem or ride it out another year or two.
Yep, no one is going to come here knowing he is a dead man walking.I believe Pruitt is gonna get at least 2 more years to right this ship but I see a disturbing pattern with his assistant coaches. I may be wrong, but it seems like we have at least 3 assistants leave every year for various reasons and that pattern probably will occur at the end of this year. What assistant, worth his salt, would want to jump into our current situation? It's almost like career suicide to be an assistant at UT right now.
Stadiums are not going to be full again until Covid is under control and a vaccine is available that actually works.Honestly these games getting postponed or especially if they get canceled are going to save Pruitt his job... I just don’t understand UT AD. I refuse to believe money is that big of an issue.... they’ll make back plenty next year with a full stadium if you bring in a proven winner. If Pruitt is out there next year you will see about half capacity. Fans are losing interest in general with the way college football is a 4 team race then you throw in the fact we are a terrible team. Nobody will show up.
