Disagree, you have to play defense. If florida doesn't play solid D and get a few stops this is not a game. If bama doesn't play solid D they don't win at the end.
Yes, the days of run, run, pass and DOMINATE D are a thing of the past. That said, you can't play Captain Leach ball either..
You have to have a solid D that doesn't give up too many freebies .
Yes!That is a worse position to be in, due to having the same information, but later than sooner. Basic information/game theory...in game decisions, information is more valuable the sooner you can get it.
Or the math:
Assume a 2 pt conv has a 50% success rate
Assume an XP has a 100% conversion rate
If you take the sequence of
XP (100%) THEN
2-pt conversion (50%)
Your odds of winning are 50%.
Rather, if you take the sequence of 2-pt conversion, THEN (2nd decision based on the 1st outcome), your odds of winning are 62.5%.
If you make the first 2-pointer (50%) then you kick the XP for the win on the 2nd td. If you miss the first 2-pointer, then you go for 2 again on the 2nd td, which, if made, then leads to a 50% chance of winning in OT (.5 * .5 * .5 = 12.5%). 25% of the time you lose outright in regulation by failing back to back conversions. 62.5% chance of winning in total. Much better than 50%.
Yes!Defense in this era boils down to a couple of things. Create as many negative plays as possible to stall drives and create turnovers. If you’re of the mind that you are going to shut other teams down, especially really good teams, you are living in an alternate reality. Score as many as you can on offense, create as many negative plays and turnovers as possible on defense.
But yes, you do have to play defense.
I mean...they could also have the thought "if I dont wanna do this anymore, I can just keep my nose clean and suck until they fire me and then sleep on my giant pile of money each night."I don't blame people for being upset, and a move probably does need to be made, but destroying a guy by spreading inside knowledge or just garbage rumors that some are privy to just to accomplish getting him out quicker is disgusting, and all it does is scare other prospective coaches away....it would me.
I can imagine the thought.."If I don't do well enough, or piss the wrong people off, they will use what we have to do to compete against me to justify firing me".
No, not shutdown. Solid D, minimize big plays and freebies, handful of negative plays (as you said), turnover or two. D that occasionally stall the other team and disrupts their flow.Defense in this era boils down to a couple of things. Create as many negative plays as possible to stall drives and create turnovers. I wonder if someone is going to get really creative soon and think of an "outside the box" way to slow these offenses down. I feel many are still slowly transitioning away from being focused on stopping the run (Pruitt DEFINITELY is). These passing offenses are going nuts. No, not shutdown.
