-VQTennessee is trying to be active in the transfer portal to address some needs.
The Vol program has seen activity in the transfer portal themselves with DeAndre Johnson going in. To this point, no one has been a surprise going into the portal with the exception of maybe Austin Pope.
It feels like there will be plenty of transfer activity both ways for Tennessee moving forward. The Vols are looking for a quarterback, pass rusher, defensive back, and an offensive tackle. They might also take the best guy available just as a guy like Arik Gilbert, if he enters the portal.
Remember this regarding the one time transfer rule. The SEC hasn’t make a conference ruling yet on how the are going to handle it so it’s not a complete slam dunk that a non-grad transfer who goes from one SEC school to another is definitely going to be eligible immediately. Our guess is that the SEC will adopt the national rule, but we likely won’t know for sure for a while.
-VQWhile it has been quiet on campus this week, we believe the investigation or inquiry in to the program by the University’s compliance office is still on going. That office is getting help from Michael Glazier’s group out of Kansas City which is common practice for schools who are doing an investigation into one of their own programs.
Where that investigation stands and what has been learned is unclear at this point. We did reach out to Chancellor Plowman’s office this week to try and get an update and a comment regarding where things stand at this point with the inquiry but we haven’t gotten a response to our request yet. Chancellor Plowman was in the office some this week working. Everyone is interested in knowing where she stands with the football program. Where Phillip Fulmer stands hasn’t been in doubt. He’s believed all year that Pruitt should be back for year four and implied as much in his last public statement which was with the bowl announcement.
-VQPruitt and his staff have been working full steam ahead. Pruitt has spoken with possible coaching candidates as well in regards to the offensive line and defensive line. He’s also been doing research on other possible candidates. With the NFL season wrapping up on Sunday, Pruitt will have more discussions and talk to more candidates starting next week.
As we mentioned in the podcast a couple of names that could be possibilities as OL coaches are Ryan Pugh who is at Troy. Jim Turner is the OL coach with the Cincinnati Bengals and Matt Moore who is on Neal Brown’s staff at West Virginia. Another possible name is Michigan’s Ed Warinner. We believe Bo Davis will be his main target for the defensive line opening. He will have competition for Davis but those two have spoken. We believe that Tosh Lupoi wants to stay in the NFL.
As for other movement on the assistant front, the question is will Brian Neidermeyer and Tee Martin get new deals? It doesn’t feel that way right now, but we will see. Their contracts end on January 31st. Will Friend didn’t anticipate he was going to get a new deal which is why he jumped on the two year deal at South Carolina.
Some have asked can Pruitt hire someone right now? We haven’t been told he can’t. Again he’s talking to candidates for his two current vacancies. He has not offered anyone a job and we don’t believe he has asked for a contract from the University for anyone at this point.
You spoke my heart.I haven’t posted in here since the last coaching search, but it seems everything works in cycles. We ask the same questions of the administration and get the same answers or lack there of. I want our team to be champions just like any of you. However, I think it is absolutely asinine to wish our team and our players ill fate. The best thing for this program is not another coaching search but for Pruitt to right the ship and become the man. I don’t know yet if he can, but if he is here I will be rooting as hard as I ever do for this team to be successful. Not a single person on the hill desires/deserves a lack of success. I admit coaching searches have some appeal and excitement but I am sick and tired of them.
Just my thoughts as unpopular as they may be.
