How in the world can they allow a coaching search to go for a while? This needs to be an almost seamless transition. Can we please try to do what Texas did Sark? No fan fare, no public embarrassment, just fire the guy and announce a new guy almost the same day.

That would be great if we were anyone but Tennessee.

I’m sure this has to go through at least 3 interviews:

Boyd, Plowman, and Fulmer.
All agreeing all approving
And that will be the problem unfortunately.

maybe. but Fulmer and Steele aren't strangers and i'm sure Fulmer is giddy to have him on this staff, whether he orchestrated it or not. and i doubt he was cut out of that decision. how the deal got done and working out all the details of the contract etc...sure, i think you're right. but i'm betting fulmer wanted him.

perhaps. trust me. i think steele hire was a bad call all way around. not sure why we went that route. only thing i can think is boyd and chancellor said theres no budget.

It won’t drag out. Marrone or Steele will be the HC! If Pruitt even gets let go. Either way we still gonna suck

Fulmer was likely just an advisor here. This was Randy Boydo's decision, negotiated with Chancellor.

I could easily see Fulmer sticking his neck out for Pruitt, in an advisory capacity. But hell, he's earned that right.

IMO, he lost that right with the extension.

Imo, he’s there for experience for someone.

With the hopeful addition of Gardner and/or Gus as previously said they’re wanting experience for someone.

Dumping a ton of money for assistants and grabbing Chadwell at 500-700 would be a beautiful play by Tennessee for once.

eh. that's why i go back to Fulmer wanting him. Steele was a finalist for this job 3 years ago. and he could get him cheap b/c of the buyout.

Steele's not a bad coach, he's a good recruiter, he's a vfl, and was willing to come here in an unnamed role to help fix this ish.

i don't know if it works or not, but i don't have any ill will about it. we could, and have, done worse when it comes to hiring staff members.

all i do know is hiring steele in the role he's currently "not" in, lol, doesn't provide any real clarity as to what direction we're picking here. lol.

Every time I see the word “cheap” thrown around, I immediately think of UT.

There’s no reason why we can’t fork out the money for a proven HC.

While I don’t necessarily disagree, what makes you think anyone can do that? No one has. Not one other coach in the country has figured it out.

Honestly UGA would have the best shot due to their recruiting but they’re handicapped by having Kirby as a HC.

What other team is even close? LSU last year was lightning in a bottle.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t by any means. They’ve been down the bargain bin road so many times. Personally I’d hate it if we didn’t at least kick the can to see where it rolled than to have him go to a rival and be the Nxt great coach.

I love this forum. Every time there’s a coaching search or potential for one, we all get excited about the possibilities and think an amazing hire is about to take place. Then battered Vol syndrome kicks in and people began rationalizing how mediocre to bad hires are really great hires and somewhere along the way we think loser coaches who have never won anything or have .500 to worse records are going to take us to the promised land.

I'm certain I've never seen so many people on this site as that night. @Freak can probably verify, but I'm pretty sure the server crashed a gazillion times. I couldn't even access the site to check it out after GoVolsXtra sent me the text. What an insane night. The night UT football died, honestly. We stopped being a program of stability that night.

Hubbs confirmed more people signed up to volquest that night than any other day in their history
