The scope of the violations is as significant as the number. It will be interesting to see what they reported, how it was framed and how far back they go. And if the NCAA pushes it a bit more or is content to stick with what UT reported.
The only thing that matters is if we're going to get hit with something so severe that it limits the coaching pool.

My guess is yes.

I hear you. I just think him getting fired and forced out of Houston despite winning a lot is a big red flag. Not a ton of nice things about him came out of there.

He could be exactly what we need though. I don't know the guy. I just think these red flags will probably reveal themselves down the line. If not right away.

He will probably hide away at Bama and be labeled a genius again within 3 years.

We could probably do much worse. But man it would feel like a missed opportunity to me if that's where we land.
I don't want him as a coach here either, but the fact that he's an a-hole is absolutely not a disqualifier. I guess it depends on what kind of a-hole he is. In O'Brien's case, he appeared to piss off a bunch of his own players with the GM decisions he made; that's not the a-hole you want. It seemed like a similar deal with Chip Kelly in the NFL.

It seems like a good bet for him to be the next successful Saban rehab project. O'Brien is a good offensive play caller and will have a field day with that talent.

They have to do something. If the school doesn't bear some responsibility, there is zero disincentive for hiring dirty coaches. I'm sure it will be far less than it would have been if NCAA was the one leading the investigation.

I didn’t say they wouldn’t do anything, but I don’t think we’re going to get hit as hard as a lot of people think.

Within 2 months of discovery, we completely investigated the situation, internally and externally, reported to the SEC and NCAA, and fired everyone involved. If the NCAA comes in after that and says, “Nevertheless, bend over...” who’s going to ever accurately and thoroughly self-report again? I mean, why would you? You’d be better off just hoping no one ratted on you, because it would be the same punishment either way.

Gilbert is more of a Barnes guy while Ingram is more of a Peyton guy. Right now, Barnes has the image and stability Plowman would like to emulate and he's vouching for Gilbert.

Thanks for the info.

Not saying that Gilbert will fail, he's a quality AD with many years of experience. However, that type of analysis scares me again. "Doing things right" does not imply going with a choice of somebody you trust or are aligned with. Doing things right implies actually learning and knowing your subject matter and making the decision independently of outside input. What Barnes or PM thinks should just be small considerations in the process. You never pick an AD because somebody of influence likes them better. That's how we have ended up in this mess for two decades.

The buck has to stop on the desks of Donde/Randy. They need to think university first, athletic department second, and not about who likes who the best. The influence, if there is any, is what sport generates the lion's share of the revenues that support all of the non-revenue sports on campus? Football. You have to make sure the AD choice understands that and can accomplish everything needed to make sure it thrives while also helping the other sports achieve their best. Maybe Gilbert can do that, but I do not see evidence of it at East Carolina, where I do at UAB with Ingram.

I would hope they would also do serious due diligence outside of those two and not rush the hire just to get a football coach. It's a critical hire that needs t one vetted and analyzed correctly. We see what doing it rushed and poorly did to UT with several in the past including Phil.

Who would you like as the next HC? Not who you think they will go with, just your preference

Whoever can adeptly navigate all the politics, personalities and power plays-- the 3 Ps of Tennessee football. That's a big part of the job, and while the people change, that does not.

Found a clip of Steele leading last night's team meeting:

So you used the three places that fought like h$ll to cover up their transgressions as examples of being open and investigating themselves..... 😂
Baylor fired Briles and turned the program upside down
Ole Miss fired Freeze and turned the program upside down
Penn State fired everyone and turned their program upside down

Tennessee was way out ahead of this thing and fired everyone involved

I think it stands to reason that if we are hiring a new AD, fighting a buyout case with Pruitt, weathering FIFTY(!) level 1-2 violations, and trying to stabilize the program... we might really get Steele through at least next December. Maybe longer if we want to save our money until we really think we have our guy, then dump our VFL coach and throw bags at a winner, like Ole Miss did with Luke/Kiffin.
