I would want to believe that both of these sentiments would work to keep him here but I fear Kiffin only cares about Kiffin and would be up for moving UP if he got the chance.

That is the only thing holding me back from wanting him hired. He is entertaining to watch on the field and on Twitter for sure.
IF Kiffin was hired here and he was successful, he would then moved UP and would have few other places to go that would be more attractive.

Napier apparently is going to try and wait it out for LSU, Florida, Clemson, or Alabama.

Isn't Neal Brown 4 years ago similar to Napier? I know he hasn't coached across the country as much, but they strike me as being similar. Any coach that can take Troy into LSU and win has me intrigued. West Virginia is a hard place to win at. If the first tier of most of our coaching wants fall through, I think UT could do worse than Neal Brown.

Was just coming to post something similar - if we're not getting the Kiffins/Freeze's of the world, I think this hire checks a ton of boxes.

Basically was what Napier is right now - three 10+ wins seasons in a row (including LSU upset and a conference championship) at a program that was good in the mid 2000s, but hadn't won more than 6 games the prior four years to him arriving.

Offensive Coordinator at Kentucky, so experience in the SEC
Offensive Coordinator at Texas Tech for Tommy Tuberville, so likely has recruiting ties to Texas

Hasn't lit the world on fire in his two seasons at WVU, but hasn't crapped the bed either, including improvement this year and they only had one game this season in which they weren't competitive.

I think he'd be a safe hire and could potentially be really good as he's 40 years old and already has 6 years of HC experience under his belt.

Agree. But talking three year contracts is silly. No coach is hired with less than 5 years on his contract today. The recruits will not sign if the coach has less than that. That's why Fulmer extended Pruitt, he thought he was going to make it after the finish in the second year. They will have to give a proven coach at least 6 years now with the sanctions. Which is why some who are saying make it an interim for a year is not going to work. It tells the recruits to look elsewhere immediately not just in the current class, but the following class because they are recruited 2-3 years in advance. Those later classes would not know who the coaches were gong to be and the program will be losing at a high rate until the longterm HC/staff are hired.
I think it might be high time for recruits to start to figure out that there is nothing, not even a long-term contract, that has a coach tied to a school long-term. Perhaps a more old school approach where you also commit to a school that you like, in addition to a coach is warranted.

He's intriguing to me. One of his biggest points he said at Buffalo he is recruiting 1 and 2 star guys and winning, so you know he can develop them.

Agreed. UWW has also kept winning without him but not quite at the same level. So is it just somewhat easy to win there or did he build a juggernaut?

Both are tricky. Some would be willing to go that route while others won’t.
That's good enough for me! Fire up the Lane Train! Let the Hughmors fly!

What you say is true, but I am talking about the influence he has or would have.
Completely agree that he has plenty of influence. But it’s clear that there are a lot of influences at UT and they don’t pull in the same direction. Ever. Which is what is preventing us from ever getting an elite coach. Because they can’t guarantee full support from everyone.

No idea. I hadn't followed them.
Another point is he has ties to Plowman as well. They were in the system at Nebraska together.

I think how well he's recruiting relative to Buffalo's competition is more relevant. Butch was winning with 2 and 3-star recruits too, but it sure as hell wasn't because Butch was a good developer. For all we know Buffalo might be pulling in good talent for a MAC team.
