You are right...it just doesn't make sense. Right now, I am going with:

a. This has all been done for a while and the HC has also been unofficially hired and OK with Steele
b. Steele did this as a favor to his friend (Fulmer) knowing what would happen but happy for the extra cash
c. Steele was hoping to do at UT what he attempted at AU

Open to other options.

Fulmer had a plan involving Steele and Donde nixed Fulmer and the plan. - I think we have a winner

Something that isn't adding up in my head still is the Steele hire.

Did they do this randomly and just allow it or was there a master plan.

Does a new coach come in and keep him and add Garner (or does Steele hire him now)?

Was this all already discussed?

Seems odd that Steele would come here just to be let go.

But again maybe they really didn't know and thought PF and JP were going to be here long term.

Something just doesn't add up.

The more I see the process, I believe Steele was brought in to stabilize things.
However, I believe AV when he says this has been worked on for weeks. Imo TN had some candidates who said they would take Steele as DC so he was brought in to take him off the market and the details would be finalized later.

Probably less than 5%......if you have two press conferences then you hold the college sports news cycle for at least one more day.

I would look for a HC hire no later than Wednesday. White is already on the phones setting up interviews.

I would guess the specific candidates will leak soon.

Just remember, Steele hasn't even been given a proper position title yet (contractually speaking).

So he's agreed to come in as a "Defensive Assistant" and then was given the title of Interim. But the new AD will be responsible for handling/signing all the related contracts.

I'm not saying Steele won't be on the new HC staff, but depending on who Danny hires he may well say "new coach picks his squad, sorry" and that be the end of that.

I don't think we're getting Lane Kiffin, even though I would be over the moon with him. Lane is the FU hire that will be an amazing ride for a few years and inevitably end in tears, one way or another. I also think that, regardless of how much we love him on VN, Lane is not universally loved by the greater Vol fanbase in real life, and they don't want to start another schism like the one that developed over Johnny and Fulmer.

The DW hire is not an FU hire, it is buying membership in the Blue Blood Society, The Establishment, whatever you want to call it. Like I said earlier, I think we are swimming in a different ocean now, and the hire may be someone that nobody saw coming, likely because we didn't think it was possible. I think they are shooting for a long term solution that unifies.

Also, I'm going to need to change my avi soon, because I think the fire has been put out.
