I feel for* for the ones that are excited- because deep down, they know it's not going to work. They know he's regressed each season. They know he's never had to recruit like he's about to. But, they just want us to be successful and win, just like we all do.

I'm just not going for it this time. Not anymore.

I think Heupel would have turned down this job were it not for DW being AD. I think any coach needed a lot of reassurance, and he knew he could trust DW.

I see what your saying but we have to hope for better than that. This coach needs to get us back to competing and winning SEC championships..this bridge coach idea just won’t work for us.

As someone who has been an underdog most of my life, here is a particular take:

Our last few coaches arrived here because of name (Kiffin, Dooley) or the coattails they were riding on (Butch, Pruitt).

Think about it - both Kiffin and Dooley had questionable coaching records before coming here but because they carried a well-known name everyone assumed they were going to be awesome.

Butch followed Kelly everywhere and Pruitt was just a DC under big time head coaches. Everyone thought they would be good by correlation.

Heupel may be terrible, or he could turn out to be an awesome hire. I do identify with him some as someone not graced with a coaching royalty name or who just coasted on the coattails of someone else. He seems to have legitimately made his way up to where he is.

I am going to take a wait and see approach and hope that the players will be able to identify with him and invest in the program

Looks like those hires were made more on what the perception would be to the public and hope they work out. Remember Kiffin's dream team he sold us? They may have worked out eventually. JP had a good cast his first year. He just wasn't a good head coach.

Jones had won a conference championship at two other programs in two different conferences before coming to UT. Heupel has been a HC for all of 3 years and just went 6-4.

Lazy comaprision..... Jones ran behind BK's coattails and ran when things got tough.
Heupel has been at 2 P5 programs which Jones never was, He has coordinated top 5 offenses... Go dig into some stats... His team fell off between year 1 and 2 because his QB had a gruesome injury and we know what happens with unprepared QB's... This year they had a ton of opt outs.. Oh and he has beaten by out scoring the golden boy Kiffin

We could have done way worse. This is exactly what our very talented and very young WRs and QBs needed. Just get him a really good defensive staff and I think we could have a lot of fun the next few years.

Trip, let's chew it up, my Vol brother. At first, the moment I read Thamels tweet, I was done. The last few hours, ive had time to sit back, take it in, research, ponder. I realize, I was disappointed not because of Heupel, but because Freeze was right there, and maybe even Kiffin...had nothing to do with Heupel. I have to say, between then and now, im starting to come around a bit. At least seeing the potential. Have you truly looked into Heupel? I hadnt...

DW got paid to essentially do nothing. Congrats DW!

He’s getting paid to repair this program. Like it or not it’s not gonna be easy. No one is touching freeze. Lane has skeletons in his closet that has rubbed the white family the wrong way from his time at FAU. Supposedly lane hasn’t grown up at all. No other coaches will touch this program.
