Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

I don't think it would matter who was hired, some were going to be excited, some were going to be optimistic, some were going to be under whelmed and some were just going to be pi$$ed. That is just what college ball is. I always try and remember that the coach who shall remain nameless down south wasn't their first choice either. I wish they would have hired Rich Rodriguez, people forget that.

The football program is in an interesting spot. We have some talent right now. More than most people realize imo even after transfers. But expectations are in the basement based on last year where the wheels clearly came off and QB play was awful. Toxic environment.

Have to think even if we don't have an unbelievable season, it shouldnt be hard for Heupel to exceed expectations. Could give us some good momentum for this 22 class. Find a little momentum and keep slowly letting it build.

If we had hired somebody like Franklin the expectations would have been a lot higher. Just a thought.
Yep and I can hear the excuses coming out of Franklin's mouth. Heupel is a winner and a competitor. He will put a exciting offense on the field. This season is going to be fun.

SIAP - any word on the coaching staff? Confirmed hires, speculation, etc.? Typically there is a thread in Football Forum but it’s a mess over there right now.

Been swamped and haven’t stayed as close as I would have liked

Good morning, VN. The Lord be with you today!

Drink some coffee. We got to work harder and get this DC hire in the rearview!
Put on some steam!

Dick drives me nuts. Talked more about him and his foundation and other coaches than he did the game. Non stop motor mouth. lol
That seems to be the trend with all these announcers that are supposed to be calling the game or boxing match or whatever, they rattle off about themselves or anything else except the game they are supposed to be calling. Horrible to listen to. I just turn the sound off.

Doesn’t make a bit of difference if your coaches can’t develop that talent and win as the last 10+ years has shown us.
Thing is though the teams like Florida, Georgia, Alabama, LSU (usually), are recruiting top 5 and developing the talent. 15-25 in our conference will get us stomped by our rivals I don’t care how well we develop them. I’m extremely worried about defense with this hire. Giving up 500YPG in the AAC is eye opening

For starters we need to worry about beating The SEC teams you didn't mention on a consistent basis before we start competing with the big dogs. We weren't gonna go from sucking to SEC Championship contenders overnight no matter who we hired. Heupel isn't bringing his defensive staff with him. He understands that he's gonna need a much better defense in The SEC.

I am getting a really good vibe with CJH. He really wanted to be here when it opened up. That means a lot. Now just deliver the D staff. I hope people will back off and give him space and time to get this rolling. I feel much better with him at the helm than I did with Dools, Botch and Jeremy.

Watching his O as I get time. Points, lots of points, and different ways to get them. It's moldable to the roster talent really well. Guys better get in shape.

I got really good vibes with all the coaches when they were first brought on...

Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt all said the right things and all gave legit reasons from their backgrounds to be optimistic.

I’m done falling for that same trap again. Not saying you did the same thing or throwing shade here, but personally I’m done with doing that. When the results show, I will be in. Until then, I’m not letting myself be fooled by the good feeling thing again.

Until he shows otherwise, the JH show is just another $4M/yr middle-to-lower-end of the conference coach that will have us happy to be winning 7-8 games a year with blowouts to our big 3 rivals while paying him not to coach here starting in 2025 while we do this again.

I expect this hire to be horrific tbh. He was 7th in the AAC in recruiting this past season and his teams got worse each year. I’m not expecting much but I hope for the best

Ron top 15 -25 won’t help you win here. You hv to be top 5-7 to compete in the SEC.
I think the reality is we have to consistently win 7-9 games per year for consecutive years to make the jump. Top 15 is however sufficient enough to win 8 games per year and that should be our actual goal at this moment.

I am very interested to see who we target in recruiting. Are we going up against Florida, Georgia, Alabama, etc. for WRs, TEs and RBs, or will we be going after guys recruited by UK, USC, Missouri, etc.

Kentucky was never in the top 30 at one point and won 10 games in 2018, went 8-5 in 2019. Won their bowl both seasons

Mizzou won the East and went to the cotton bowl in 2013-2014 with a bunch of 3 stars

Dan Mullen won 8-9 games a year at Mississippi State with almost nothing

Having to have elite recruits to compete is only true if you have mediocre coaches (ex: UGA)

Walk before you run. Have enough talent at that level of recruiting to go 8-4 and we get to see if he can win some against better talent. Development is important. Mizzou proved it when they won two east division titles over UF and UGA with 3* recruits that were developed in the system over time. So development of roster depth is also important. Need good schemes to overcome superior talent. Mizzou had them along with their development. Mizzou cannot attract superior talent - we can once we prove the system works and have returned to competing at a higher level.

UCF and the 500 yards per game. Some of it is there are more possessions in each game when you go fast break like this O scheme does. Look at LSU's and Bama's D's in undefeated NC seasons - they gave up more yards and points than historically was the case. So, the D philosophy changes to contain because they have to use such a deep rotation to keep guys fresh. The other part is DW pushed Randy Shannon on CJH for DC. Randy Shannon has been washed up as DC since getting canned as HC at Miami. It's been a downhill slide ever since like our own Chavis.
