But they have to pay him enough to keep auburn away.

1mil should be enough since that’s what we paid last year

and I’d find a way to make it a 3 year deal with the 3rd year being large

He's under a two-year contract as an "assistant football coach." His on-field responsibilities are intentionally undefined. Auburn has been squealing since he was hired. They fired him; now they want UT to pick up more of the tab.

I really don’t think you need sec retreads to be able to recruit.

I didn’t say retreads. How about a few guys known on the 4-5 star circuit by development programs like NPA, 7x7 circuits, high level HS coaches and as importantly have been following the more than dozen 2022 TN high level kids since 10th grade?

Did your research show that his second year at Mizzou as OC, his offense was 17th in the country in points per game?

Your argument could make some sense if he didn’t already have a successful stint as an playcaller in the SEC that landed him a HC job.
I know what they were ranked in 2017, and I know how they got there and how hollow it was.

72 points vs. Missouri State, 34 points vs. Kentucky in a loss, 28 points vs. Georgia in a loss, 68 points vs. Idaho, 52 points vs. UCONN, 45 points vs. Florida (good showing here, but that team had quit on McElwain at this point.), 50 points vs. Tennessee (same thing for Butch Jones), 45 vs. Vanderbilt, 48 vs. Arkansas, 16 vs. Texas in the bowl.

Again, we are absolutely going to score points. Debating that would be silly. I just don't think this offense is built to score on teams that have similar talent or a talent advantage. We will feast on bad teams, no-show against good teams. And on the talent side, we've already lost basically an entire signing class to the portal, have a notoriously average recruiter as HC (and staff as it is currently constructed), and we will very likely have scholarship reductions for the next two to three years.

The more I read, I just don't know why we went in this direction. We needed someone who can do more with less because we were always going to have a lean couple of years.

Yes that’s a staple especially in the red zone. Rpo Peak TE pop is the technical term some people. If the LB covering up the TE sinks down on the play action he can fake a block and leakbout behind him. SF does this a lot with Kittle.
@volbeast33 here is a play like the one you’re talking about. It ended with a drop but the play was there.

Also here’s another play from that game that should’ve been a TD for UCF. UCF left so many plays on the field during this game. Could’ve been a 2TD win by UCF.

I haven't followed this entire conversation, how does this compare to Butch Jones and his Alabama stint? Surely if Auburn is complaining about Steele we would have complained about his deal at Bama? Maybe it isn't the comparable.

Pretty sure JH had already left prior to the bowl game vs texas when they absolutely pissed their pants.

If his contract is the way I read, if he gets announced as DC, then they may have a case.

All that basically sums up as retreads. Football is football. Good players are everywhere. Just Bc people haven’t recruited to an sec school before means virtually nothing to me honestly.

yea if he’s the DC obviously the 400k won’t get it done with Auburn

I think the TB comments make sense in that DW needs to find the basement number we can pay him to be DC and keep his auburn buyout. 750-1mil imo

This is another play that I love because it’s so simple. JH starts the RB in the slot and when he moves back pre snap it signals immediately that they are in man... then they use the outside WR on a rub/pick route against the LB (which is already in a tough matchup) to basically have a wide open easy touch down on the wheel route. The LB just has no chance to defend this. Imagine doing this with beckwith.....
I’m pretty sure Mullen did this against us several times this year if I’m not mistaken.

Is that out of the norm tho? Why should we pay him more when we don’t have to? Didn’t Chavis basically coach at LSU for free.

I’m surprised by the negativity in here for the hire. There’s reasons to be reserved on the hire, but some of the things being thrown around here are just contrived. Offense should be good, there’s no reason to think it won’t work in the SEC considering he’s had success running it at mizzou of all places. Not to mention, it seems pretty in line with what a lot of SEC schools are running/trending towards.

Recruiting is a bit of a question mark. Nothing in his prior stints scream elite recruiter, but I don’t see anything that says he’s a bad recruiter either. Likely an average recruiter. Seems UCF was pretty on par with what Frost was doing. There’s a lot of talent in Florida, but the big names are going to power 5 schools all across the country, so it’s not like UCF was going to have top 25 ranked classes no matter who’s down there. Honestly not sure having an “elite recruiter” would matter a whole lot given the state of the program. We’re not going to beat out the big time programs for elite recruits right now, just is what it is.

Defense is the big question mark. Needs to hire an elite DC. If he can do that I think it’ll be a successful hire. Hopeful it’s Steele, but if not need someone with experience that he can hand that side of the ball off to.

He's already making 900k which isn't far off the average DC salary in the SEC. Auburn pushing for us to inflate his rate to benefit them isn't really fair to us and our new AD (who didn't hire Steele to begin with).

UT loopholed it, no question. Not the first school to do it and won't be the last. But UT doesn't have to name him DC, nor was that the initial intent of the new staff. So now UT has a prickly situation. Either they amend and appease and hope things get ironed out or they start fresh.

Support is warranted if there is change and a willingness to help ones self. If we aren't willing to help ourselves apathy is not only warranted, it should be expected. I would be 100% on board and support if there was real change happening.

But there isn't.

A lower level coach that hasn't accomplished anything in the SEC or FBS has just been given the reigns - again. Just like the last 3 times - we are paying him on the lower end of the conference pay scale...and outside of all the stats and what not he is just another gamble at the end of the day. Just like last time he says all the right things in the press conference. Just like last time he brings something new and exciting. Meanwhile - you have guys like Hugh Freeze and Lane Kiffin that at the very least can appreciate what it takes to win in this conference all but begging to right this thing. This feels like Butch Jones 2.0.

I really hope CJH kills it here. I really really really do. I hope I have to eat a second helping of crow. But at the end of the day, at least right now, this is no different than what we have been doing. Rinse/Repeat all over again.

I've been through the hard times. Been a fan since the mid-80's. Every time since Fulmer was fired I got optimistic about the new coach. I'm done with that, its show me time. Until then, there is no reason to believe this will be any different.

Apathy. It is finally here for me.

Honestly, point me out one thing on Lane Kiffin's resume that is more impressive than CJH as a head coach?

I'll hang up and listen....

So, 2022 kids or their advisers having no idea who assistants are means nothing to our in state success. Noted.
