Can anyone talk me through the transfer takes recently?

I'm particularly curious if anyone can discern a rationale for taking anything other LBs after the exodus that just occurred. Maybe guys are going to move from the line to LB? or from DB to LB? I don't know. And I definitely assume that the coaches who see the players every day and know the scheme they're trying to install know what they're doing. But, it's just curious to me that we didn't just take a half dozen LBs as transfers.

Anyone follow the logic and can show me how this works out?

Well one thing is most people believe we'll see more of a 4 2 5 look. So the need for LBs is less because of that.

Good post, doc.

I have never understood why people always want to follow somebody else's path to success instead of taking their own. That is clearly what happened with not just the Gump, but also with Botch. Both were poor imitations of the guy that helped them get the job (Saban/Kelly) who had blazed their own paths to success. In both cases UT's "leadership" chose imitator/wannabes. That stuff happens across the spectrum in sports and all other aspects of society. We have seen it play out with the LV program. Yeah, let's select deputy Holly to run it into the ground because Pat wants her. Uh, even a legend like Pat should not have the right to dictate the path of the program because she was not exactly setting the woods on fire before her diagnosis. The game had moved on from her method of play. So should have the program. Dools was just a SEC blue blood buddy deal panic hire. A total whiff.

You might take a hit for a time with team performance as the system changes and roster is rebuilt, but in the long run it is worth it. Fulmer and his system was done. It was the decision making after it that was screwed up. In Gumpland - when Bear was done, Stallings briefly raised it up, then Saban took it to new heights. In between was pain. You just try to make the period in between as short as possible. That is where UT leadership failed. They never learned to quit compounding the problem. We go barren wasteland until new growth starts slowly building. Just look at the history of the program.

Hire the very best like Bama did, or, hire the very best innovator at the time who has been successful in previous stops like UF did with Meyer.

IMO UT finally did the later with Heup.

I think Pruitt lacked the intelligence to develop his own style. When I got into coaching I had a number of mentors and tried to take a little something good from each of them. Love him or hate him for his UGA ties but Erk Russell was one of the best for me, mostly due to his humility. The best ones, besides being good at their job, had very little ego and didn't expect you to become a mini me. I'm not sure Saban falls in this category and I feel like Pruitt lacked the intelligence to be anything more than a fanboy.

100%.

In Botch's case he actually dumbed down Kelly's route tree and made it easier to defend. Years ago I compared the two schemes and it was like what did I just see? Why take something innovative that lifts performance higher than the talent level of the roster and dumb it down? Now we know. Ego. Small minded micro manager.

We've got about a dozen scholarship LB's with Mitchell on the way. With the 3-3 look a few former DE's become OLB's. With the 4-2, guys like Baron roll back up to DE. So how many do you think you need on an 85 man roster with many other position groups?

Truth is we as fans do not know what we have at LB because the new coaching staff is developing them into the new scheme without our help. Some of them were held out of SP due to injuries and suspensions, so it appears worse than it is. The reason they would not take a bunch of transfers beyond Mitchell is because they have a good idea about what they have and may fit going forward. Take it as a positive that this staff is not like the past losers.

What rumor mill? I’ve been told Bama all along.
I think he wanted to go to Bama all along. His dad basically confirmed it in that interview he did a couple months ago.

I believe it was a 247 article last week - maybe Rivals - that said Ohio State was looking more realistic. I think Austin Price said that a month ago as well.

Either Alabama opened a spot for him semi-recently, or they were afraid the inter-conference transfer thing was going to be a problem.

I’m fine with boomers on here as long as they don’t try to tell us that Fulmer was the best thing to happen to the University when he very clearly was not.

Well, I sure am glad that you‘re ok with boomers! What are you going to do if one of the boomers breaks your conditional permission?

With all of the recent transfers in, what does our two deep look like? Here is my crack at it...corner and inside backer seem like they biggest concerns for depth. None of it matters if we can't find the guy for the QB position though. Certainly not a complete roster, but looks to be a roster that can be bowl eligible if we find a leader at QB.

QB
- Milton OR Bailey OR Hooker

RB
- Small
- Evans

WR1
- Hyatt
- Tillman

WR2
- V. Jones
- Coby

Slot
- Payton
- Calloway

TE
- Fant
- Pope

LT
- Davis
- Calbert

LG
- Carvin
- Spraggins

C
- Cooper Mays
- Carvin

RG
- Cade Mays
- Spraggins

RT
- Wright
- Calbert

DT
- Middleton (If he is still here)
- Butler
- Terry

NT
- Solomon
- Simmons

DE
- Bumphus
- Emerson
- Tremblay

OLB
- Baron
- Harrison
- Eason

OLB
- Young
- Joseph

ILB
- Banks
- Garland

ILB
- Mitchell
- Willis

CB1
- Taylor
- George

CB2
- Burrell
- Fields

Nickel
- T. Jackson
- Slaughter

Safety
- McCullough
- McDonald

Safety
- Flowers
- Charles

I believe it’s all those younger guys coming along and playing hard....the Herd Line for example.

Tanner Jeannot is playing better hockey than someone like Kyle Turris almost ever did as a Predator.

Herd line is fun to watch. They play some tough, gritty hockey and it drives teams nuts. I love how Hynes used them at the start of the game to set the tone from time to time. Smart move.

Juice has also been a big reason they have gone on this run. His .940+ save percentage from about the halfway mark of the season to now is incredible. He’s one of the best in the league the last few months.

Canes will be a tough series. They also have a stout goalie and even though we just beat them twice to end the year, they are really good. Big, fast and very talented.

Line of scrimmage on both sides looks like it could be a strength. I good mix of talent and experience, which can go a long way in the SEC.

A lot of youth at the skill positions on offense. Likely to be flashes, but expecting some growing pains as well.

As you mentioned l, CB and LB are pretty big question marks from a defense that wasn’t all that good there last year. If we can find a pass rush (another big question mark) it would go a long way in helping out the LB’s and CB’s in coverage.
