Yes, it's very real. Talked to a guy in Yellowstone who bought one.

There is 15-20 yr moratorium, they say due ti emissions standards, but its clearly a competition thing. Gas vs diesel. American car makers are scared crap less of competition, gasoline is king. Despite fact that diesel engines can last two and three times longer, electric or hybrid - of which Toyota holds many patents for - even longer. Biodiesel is here.

Yet, here we are. Toyota doesn't see diesel in America as cost prohibitive it seems.

Apologies for rantish nature, I havent researched this in a long time. As much as Id like a landcruiser to play around in, personally. Gotta be much more targeted in my approach. Next time I'm buying new, Taco, short cab, 4D SR5 TRD.
