It really sucks looking back on firing Fulmer. A lot of football-coaching-hire wisdom gained over the last 15 years. Fulmer still had that team playing hard. He was still bringing in top recruiting classes. A couple bad years and he’s gone. Knowing what we know now, it was an extremely myopic decision.

Yep and forced to take an offensive coordinator that he didn’t really want as well.

Sounds like an ad for an ED medicine…

I'm not going to pretend to know the ins-n-outs of what happened behind the scenes, but two losing seasons in 16 years sounds pretty darn good to me.
JMO, but I see two things.
1. The Administration was made up of idiots
2. UT thought they were so big that they could snap their fingers and get someone much bigger and better. (That obviously wasn't the case)

wasnt enamored with the type of offense we were running. people were correct, in regard to what we wanted to do on field, time was passing us by. However, Fulmer was an OC before he was a HC. We could absolutely given him more time to straighten it out.

Incorporating old school with new concepts like Satan does as well LSU has paid dividends.

Agreed. Our culture is why Salters had 2 arrests and 0 practices. It’s why we had several incoming and returning DL decide not to play for the guy who’s put countless players in the NFL. It’s why Pruitt lost more games by 25 points through 3 years than any coach in SEC history. That’s going to take longer to fix than overall talent.
The poor culture was fairly noticeable last season when you had guys going to the huddle without helping their teammates up. Pretty obvious that it was "I'm gonna get mine" instead of team-first. That's the problem with a team of recruiters as the coaches- they move on to the next big thing and leave the guys they just signed flapping in the breeze.

Has anyone seen what football game UT will have shown on their SEC Takeover day? Most schools on the SEC and ACC Networks have shown games from last year.

Which one would UT choose? USCjr or Mizzou?

Hindsight being what it is, I think I’d rather have ridden with Fulmer a few more apathetic years and let Clawson work. I don’t know this but I think Kiffin would have been okay for a few years. He may have kept Georgia from growing into what they are now. He probably was a pretty good hire, but him showing no respect for our traditions and leaving like that really Dooley’d us. PF had to go, we got extremely lucky in ‘07 to go to Atlanta…. We were murdered by Bama and Florida The writing was on the wall… Saban and Meyer were taking over the conference. Not sure any hire we made would have made a lick of difference as far as our pecking order. At best it would have kept us firmly above Kentucky Mizzou and SCar.

I’m late to the game on this convo, but I think firing Fulmer was a bad move. Financially, it was stupid. From a perception standpoint, also awful. You can’t extend a guy’s contract, then fire him less than a year later, especially when he’s a legend.

Fulmer was probably done, but he had Tahj Boyd and Bryce Petty committed. He probably could have managed a few more 7-9 win seasons and a couple good recruiting classes to stabilize the program.

I think our next biggest mistake was hiring Dooley rather than tagging Kippy Brown as interim and then getting a guy who wasn’t awful as a HC.

I posted about this awhile ago. They are not showing a football game on Tennessee day except the Orange and White game.
