Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

It'll be a big mystery until we just play some games. Plenty of potential excuses from players being lost, trying to do too much, etc. But they were a very bad defense last year and lost a lot of production. Best case, we are an average SEC defense. I think it's much more likely we are slightly below average.

An average SEC defense will be fine if the offense is good. Gone are the times where the opponent absolutely knew going in they only had to score 17-24 points to beat us.

We have elite speed at every skill position. We have an elite offensive mind calling the plays getting those guys the ball. If we get above average QB play and he can get the ball to those weapons, good luck stopping it. And it just so happens our coach is one of the best QB developers in all of football.

I'm ready.

I've been cautiously optimistic in regards to what the offense will look like. Typical wait and see mode. But this continued narrative that we're going to be slaw on the defensive side of the ball based on a surface level glance at portal numbers is really starting to annoy. I can only take solace in the fact that this same lazy 'journalism' should be talking about how we've 'come out of nowhere' later in the year after we've seen this team outperform the stench of the last coaching staff.

It's evident that the college football landscape is moving faster than anyone can keep track of, because it's like no one is considering that we've used the portal to fill the gaps left by the attrition, and probably will need to do so for another year or two while CJH and company establish their recruiting classes on results not potential. I hope the league sleeps on us this year and we punch them all square in the mouth.

correct

Everytime you see one of those articles about what we lost in the portal they dont even mention what we added. Terry, Mitchell and Payton could be some of the best pickups in the whole conference. And thats only a couple of the additions. Theres legit talent with the transfers we brought in. But to be honest these lazy hacks probably dont even know what we brought in.

Maybe I'm just being homer vol like usual, but I don't understand the clinging to 6-6. First, the schedule isn't very hard, but second, there is talent on this team, especially more than teams we'd have to lose to in order to have that record. We're thin at certain positions like LB and TE, so a couple injuries there could hurt us, but I don't see it.

It's especially strange that the VQ staff constantly speaks to how much we have upgraded this coaching staff at basically every position, and then still say we're going to struggle to become bowl eligible. I don't believe that. If we get QB play, which Heupel always does, we won't do worse than 7-5, but I'd put it more at 8-4 to 9-3. The schedule is just really favorable.
Exactly how I feel. This schedule is pretty weak compared to what we usually have.

Same. We lost Henry and BT. We gained upgrades over Crouch and the DL losses in the portal. And we added Turnage at DB. This is not a depleted defense as much as the media wants to tell us it is. Watch what that DL does this year.

I get that the staff has clearly made a point to be more positive in interviews, but this is encouraging. I agree, think the defense is going to be much tighter than predicted.

I think at this point it is leaning to be the Milton/Hooker show... we are going to need a mobile QB in this offense, especially at first, and even though I think Bailey has the best arm, he simply cannot move/shuck and jive like they can...
Bailey doesn't have the best arm.. he's 3rd or 4th in line in that aspect.. his strengths are he throws a very catchable ball and is accurate with his short to intermediate throws.. CJH wants to chuck it down the field.. I'm not sure we ever see HB start here again.. just doesn't seem to be a good fit

Having a defense comparable to last year's is doable. That combined with competent QB play would get to 7 or 8 wins. I think last year's team with all its dysfunction wins 6 games against this schedule, so 6 wins should be a layup if these coaches are any good.

Less than 6 wins and I'm worried. More than that and I'm happy, although I reserve the right to complain about every play call in every close game regardless of record.

I would put Bailey second in arm strength behind Milton, but that's just me.

Nobody was talking about us being bad before the 2nd half at GA last year. Brent Hubbs and VQ were on their podcast saying we had the talent to go up against them. We all thought we were going to go in there and beat them in Athens. At the half, we were.

Then the real JG showed up and the team quit the next week at KY. From that team we've lost Henry, Gray, a couple guys at OT who probably wouldn't be the starters here, and some other mediocre players who went down or a guy like Key who didn't play over McDonald or Slaughter last year.

We've added good players at every position through the portal. So why are we suddenly a no talent team? I don't buy it. This team was better than 3-7 last year, we just had JG. We're better than that.

10-2 Bass. You’re firing me up!

Homermania is running wild in VolNation. Make sure you buy those season tickets before they sell out.

No one is saying we're going to compete for SEC or National titles this season, hell we're talking about not having a .500 or below record. The fact remains, this team is not devoid of talent, and we're excited to see what steps forward this new coaching staff can take this season.

I'm cautiously hopeful that we're going to finally get this thing right, knowing full well it'll take several years to actually build back the success we want and the respect this brand deserves. Is that a naive thought process? Don't think so, no more naive than thinking we're never going to be good again. Takes no effort at all to bitch and moan about how bad we've been though does it?

His dad!

I did misspell Kellen

You’re old! I know this because I studied biology around the time you were being birthed.

Speaking of lost talent....we have heard about Eric Gray at Oklahoma, but anyone heard anything about Wanya Morris at OK? What about Ty Chandler at UNC? Since we apparently lost all the talent off last year's team.....
THEY tolt you too? o_O

Saw something pegging Chandler as one of the top 5 RBs in the ACC. He’s probably going to have a pretty good year behind Howell.

I'm wait and see until the first game. If Heupel's offense is as potent as I believe it could be then we will come out and punch BG in the mouth. We haven't done that in years past very often because JP's offense just sucked and Butch would always sit on his hands against cupcakes. I want to see the same thing Kiffin did in his debut. Absolutely crushed that team right away and got players some confidence and reps. Hyatt and our QB should be leading the league after 1 week.

I was done with Pruitt the minute he started JG. He should have been smart and used the covid year to get Bailey ready. When JG kept playing terribly and cost us games, the team quit. They were done after Kentucky. Pruitt was not ready for this job. I don’t care what AP or anyone says, I know for a fact of two coaches who advocated for not playing JG and he kept trotting him out there.
