Tennessee football was out on a Saturday morning for practice No. 15 of fall camp. Right off the bat, I though the energy was there. You had guys flying around, dancing, pumping each other up prior to individual starting. Throwback hip hop was on the docket today.
Jimmy Holiday was back, dressed out but off to the side doing some work. Ollie Lane was again off to the side in a helmet, doing some light jogging. Jimmy Calloway remains out for the time being.
The defense was once again doing turnover circuits to begin the day. The linebackers were thudding up quite a bit and focused on driving their feet on contact. The defensive line worked a lot under the schute and on bags – focusing on footwork but also their punch to deflect cut blocks. Corners and safeties repped ball drills a lot of the morning while we were out there.
Offensively, it was drive drill for the O-line as Glen Elarbee had the unit working this morning. The first group up was the same that we’ve been seeing (l-to-right): Wright, Carvin, Mays, Spraggins, Mays
The quarterbacks were working some speed-option with the running backs to kick off the day. That’s an interesting wrinkle that can be in the fold for the offense with either Milton or Hooker in the ballgame. Milton isn’t as skilled in the option-game as Hooker might be, but he is a load to bring down and could be a weapon in short-yardage situations.
With routes on-air, the quarterbacks and wideouts worked slants on the goal line. At times, both the outside and slot receiver ran double slants. Though it’s not reinventing the wheel, it’s evident Heupel and Golesh are putting careful considerations to their goal line schemes and strategy.
Heupel was successful inside the red zone while at UCF.
Saturday’s session will conclude around 11 am. There’s no media today. Sunday is an off day before the team is back to work on Monday. We anticipate eharing from Josh Heupel on Monday and then one of the coordinators each of the next two days to follow.
One other note: With almost a one week buffer from now to official game week, Tennessee will simulate game week next week starting on Monday with Saturday a likely off day. Preparation for Bowling Green and continued fundamental work will ensue, but getting the normal schedule for what will be a game week will be put into motion this week.
Have a great weekend!
