Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

Pulling for Nebraska. Football is better when they are. Besides...somebody has to stand up to OSU eventually. Harbaugh isn't going to get it done.

Also interested to see UCLA and Kelly Y4. Looks like their offense started firing on all cylinders last year, buy defense was trash.

Should be intriguing to watch both programs/coaches this year. I'd be shocked if both come out the other side.
I like Frost, I'd love for him to get it done and contend in the B10. Sure is off to a rough start though.

Then for all the McDonald’s bags that were reportedly going out, Pruitt’s classes at UT should have been way better than they were.

The thing many don't understand is that the UT brand isn't what neither Bama, FSU, or UGA was when he was there. There is 10 yrs of damage brand/issue repair. So it doesn't happen over night. They sprinkle in over time at UT and then by yr 4 or 5 it would've been more abundant IMO. The bag is enticing but there has to be a want to be there factor too. UT is just not the flavor of the recruits right now and that's what the masses don't want to believe as fans.

CJH puts an exciting brand of football on the field, and wins some games over the next couple of years, and the Tennessee brand or image will be plenty strong enough to pull in top 10 classes annually.

SEC East is down right now as a whole. Saban will not live forever. Other top programs, OSU and Clemson, are not nearly as dominant year to year as Bama. Kirby seems to be wearing thin in Athens, as everyone now knows he is an elite recruiter and little else.

Tennessee has the opportunity to regain a top spot in the nation over the coming decade. Just needs the right leadership. Need to aim for stability over the next few years, then build on that.

If I get ESPN+ to watch the games, how do I go about watching any games that we are on CBS for if I don't have a method of watching normal tv?

With each of Pruitt’s classes, there were a handful of blue chippers and then a HUGE drop off. He did nothing in that mid tier recruiting-wise, and he never landed anything close to a marquee name at DB (which was supposed to be his bread and butter). Everyone knows the program brand has taken a hit each year we’ve sucked, but all things considered, Pruitt’s recruiting was still mediocre at best.

In fact, everything about him was mediocre at best. In most areas he flat out sucked. Yes, he could walk into an already stacked locker room and make hay as DC. I’ll give him that. But he could not build worth a $hį7, his coaching personnel choices were outright stupid, and he was in wayyyy over his head. I would not be shocked to see him walk in as DC and win another NC somewhere that’s already got it going on. I would be shocked to see him be anything more than mediocre as an HC, and in fact, I would be shocked to see him be part of a successful rebuild as anything higher than a position coach.

The Georgia State loss was inexcusable. A lot of things in year three were inexcusable. The program was trending in an even worse direction under Pruitt (I did not think that would even be possible), and there is nothing to suggest that he would have even been successful here had they given him a decade to do it.

This should be the last post about Pruitt. There is nothing left to say.

Tennessee football was out on a Saturday morning for practice No. 15 of fall camp. Right off the bat, I though the energy was there. You had guys flying around, dancing, pumping each other up prior to individual starting. Throwback hip hop was on the docket today.

Jimmy Holiday was back, dressed out but off to the side doing some work. Ollie Lane was again off to the side in a helmet, doing some light jogging. Jimmy Calloway remains out for the time being.

The defense was once again doing turnover circuits to begin the day. The linebackers were thudding up quite a bit and focused on driving their feet on contact. The defensive line worked a lot under the schute and on bags – focusing on footwork but also their punch to deflect cut blocks. Corners and safeties repped ball drills a lot of the morning while we were out there.

Offensively, it was drive drill for the O-line as Glen Elarbee had the unit working this morning. The first group up was the same that we’ve been seeing (l-to-right): Wright, Carvin, Mays, Spraggins, Mays

The quarterbacks were working some speed-option with the running backs to kick off the day. That’s an interesting wrinkle that can be in the fold for the offense with either Milton or Hooker in the ballgame. Milton isn’t as skilled in the option-game as Hooker might be, but he is a load to bring down and could be a weapon in short-yardage situations.

With routes on-air, the quarterbacks and wideouts worked slants on the goal line. At times, both the outside and slot receiver ran double slants. Though it’s not reinventing the wheel, it’s evident Heupel and Golesh are putting careful considerations to their goal line schemes and strategy.

Heupel was successful inside the red zone while at UCF.

Saturday’s session will conclude around 11 am. There’s no media today. Sunday is an off day before the team is back to work on Monday. We anticipate eharing from Josh Heupel on Monday and then one of the coordinators each of the next two days to follow.

One other note: With almost a one week buffer from now to official game week, Tennessee will simulate game week next week starting on Monday with Saturday a likely off day. Preparation for Bowling Green and continued fundamental work will ensue, but getting the normal schedule for what will be a game week will be put into motion this week.

Have a great weekend!

Glad to have you back. Thoughts on the upcoming season? Record prediction?

Think Brent prye at PSU is one of the top DCs in CFB so hopefully Banks brings a lot that. A lot more 5 man pressures, DL stunts, and inverted looks.

Pretty much a complete 180 on both sides of the ball in terms of scheme and assignment so i think a bowl game appearance is all you can really ask for if you’re being realistic.

What say you?

I’m with you on that record as my baseline expectation. I might flip the results of the Pitt and Kentucky games. I think if we have that record, the losses will come early in the year.

Looking at that schedule and listening to some of the hype around Milton, though, I can understand the optimism that we might do better. Just need to stay healthy above all else.

Again @Weezer we didn't hv so much love but what we do know is he's a national recruiter that kids love. That's why he's been NROY more than once. What we will say and continue to say is the way it was handled here to get out of paying popcorn money is Bush league as hell. Pay the bread and be done with it vs helping the NCAA punish the school while paying attorneys long money.
