I don't know how this new math works. So you're supposed to "make a 10"? If a kid doesn't know what 14-8 is, how's he supposed to know what 14-4 is? Or what 14-10 is? Or how to get to 10? Or after he's done 14-10, how does he know to add 2? I'm just using the examples given here.I've seen a lot of common core crazy **** but I don't see the problem with this one. I'm assuming they are trying to teach kids how to do arithmetic in their head, in which case the "make a 10" rule is pretty much how everyone does it. Either this or the opposite (14-10+2). That's what I was taught and it has worked out alright for me I guess.
