Haven;t deer hunted in years either but loved my first rifle, the old lever action 30-30 which was fun to shoot. I loved rabbit and quail hunting the most. It was a family tradition for my dad and uncle to take me, my brother and 1st cousin hunting early on thanksgiving morning. Miss those times dearly.
Yeah...my health precludes me from deer hunting anymore. I've been squirrel hunting up here a few times in the last few years and that is about it.

You realize the shoulder and butt are basically referring to the same part of the animal? The butt of the pig would actually be the ham.

If anyone cares...the Ham is the back leg and the shoulder/butt are the front legs

Getting my hands on that and some BA stouts from a local Nashville brewery on Friday.
I know this is about beer, but the bourbon talk got me thinking.

My neighbor is all over the bourbon chase and in several local groups in Mid TN. Always has something awesome or rare, and loads up on enough of the goodies to always have trade value. I'm lucky to have him! And not just for the bourbon.

I used to be able to go to any one of about 10 different liquor stores around 2014-2016 and find pretty much anything. The thought of buying multiple bottles of bourbon never even crossed my mind, because they always had the greats from Buffalo Trace or Sazerac or whatever the hell else.

Right around 2016 it started to get hard. Since 2020, and everyone working from home and having a ton of time on their hands... impossible. It's like everyone took up "bourbon as a hobby" at the same time because they had time to kill and/or were drinking way more (no judgment). Even my guy that I had WAY out in the country has been discovered and raided.

Smoke some chicken thighs...keep them at 275 for about 3 1/2 hours and you can pull the bones out. Best recommendation for someone just starting out is buy a decent meat thermometer. Pork butt...haha...needs to be pulled at 200-205 internal temp and then allowed to rest. If you take it off before it hits 200 you can still eat it, but the collagen in the meat won't have broken down so it won't shred very well or be as juicy. The whole fun of it is figuring out how to do different things. Heck I smoked cream cheese blocks this weekend.

here in NC, the liquor stores are state run "ABC" stores. and our local one looks like it's going out of business, and has for several months....kinda crazy but the bourbon shelves, outside the very usual suspects (dickel, evan williams, jim beam etc.) are basically empty. the only saving grace is that they have had basil hayden's and Jefferson's relatively regularly, so i've been able to make do. but it's kinda weird, you go in and see how bare the shelves are and you wind up looking like an alcoholic at the register when you show up with 4-5 bottles for fear of not knowing if they'll have what you like the next time you come in...

Gotta keep it low (below 225). Just like smoking a block of cheddar or gouda. If you haven't made your own smoked cheeses yet you should try it.. The taste is much better than the imitation smoke you get on store-bought "smoked" cheese. I like the Cabot New York extra sharp white cheddar smoked with apple wood.

I've got some Kraft singles in the bottom of one of the drawers in my refrigerator. I'll smoke those! Thanks for the info!

Pawn shop for the gun. Order you a Vortex for the scope.
Never bought a vortex scope, but we use their binoculars and their rangefinder in archery tournaments. Products are top quality and service is as well. To my knowledge they are the only company with lifetime warranty on rangefinders. Most only warrantee for a year because of the electronics

My gun is messed up. Semi auto. Took a shot at 200 yards at a doe last night. Missed. Went to shoot again, next round didn’t chamber. Messed with it, got the next round in, went to shoot, nothing. Had to drop the clip, eject the round, reload bullet into the clip, put the clip back in and chamber. Dumb thing was still standing there. Dropped her. Need a new gun with a much better scope
Ruger American is a great inexpensive option. Would be a bolt action, but a great reliable rifle.
