Recruiting Forum Football Talk IV

I was indifferent he made the three. This weird moment where I wasn’t happy we just tied it. No part of me thought we would win.
Same here and I swear when I seen him break away I said oh no and my wife started laughing and JJJ went and did what he did. Its like you knew something bad coming when the ball went to him.

Question, because I haven't paid much attention to the NIL rules.

Could a school technically set up an NIL deal and have it offered to a recruiting prospect, have them walk on and then later put them on scholarship so it doesn't count against a recruiting class? Therefore having the capability to add more players to the roster but simultaneously staying within the signing limit?

From Tony Basilio's Wednesday blog:
Tennessee Football Is Nervous About Tim Banks & Penn State: We can confirm through sources that Banks and Penn State have talked. It appeared that Penn State was going to hire Ok State DC Jim Knowles until Ohio State jumped into the equation and, as was told to me by an industry source, 'punted them.' Now James Franklin is circling back to Tim Banks who was on his Penn State staff from 2016 until joining Tennessee last December.

Banks has been busy the past couple of weeks on the recruiting trail for the Vols. Plus he also had a zoom interview for the Duke head coaching opening as well as visiting with James Franklin for a few conversations. It goes without saying that Tennessee would hate to lose Banks after only one season. Firstly he did a very nice job as a collaborative coordinator for Tennessee's surprisingly effective defense. Plus he's involved with several prospects over the next couple of cycles.

This is the how the series turns between us and Florida and really the whole SEC. Gotta win these recruiting battles that hurt others and help us all in one fell swoop. We've been losing them for a long time. Heupel has us in the mix this time. I like our chances to get a handful of good ones. Transfers in the back pocket to fill in where we miss. Recruiting feels a lot more flexible than it has in the past. Especially with a really positive first year on the field.

Napier has been recruiting completely different caliber kids for the last few years. He's being thrown on the biggest stage of his career right in the middle of a pivotal and wild wild west recruiting offseason and hes at a disadvantage. He doesn't have the relationships. Lincoln Riley brought players with him to USC. Napier didnt have any to bring and he's losing highly ranked guys cause he doesnt know them. He's starting from scratch with this class.

You love to see it. We'll keep watching closely to see how the newest hotshot UF coach responds. 👀

That would be a shame. Although I do believe that Heupel would make another really solid DC hire if we have to. We're also in a much better spot than we were last offseason. It would suck to lose his recruiting efforts though.

I wonder if we would circle back to Al Washington. Felt like Heupel really pursued him. His stock seems down now after that Michigan game though. Still might be an interesting hire. But there should be more proven names out there this time.

Im watching the Billy Napier press conference.

I feel like he says all the right things. But he comes across like such a small town guy. Just feels like a weird fit at Florida. I think he might have killed it at Mississippi State or something like that. But i have a feeling the Florida spotlight and criticism is gonna crush him eventually. He's such a good ol boy. But the state of Florida isn't like the rest of the south. I dont know that they will find him charming or endearing unless he wins quickly.

Listening to him talk, he seems likeable enough. But im not sure he's the right hire at the right time for Florida at all. That could just be the homer in me talking. We shall see won't we.

Why leave? Put down roots and wait for a quality head coaching job to open up. The transient nature of the coaching profession is head spinning.
