A bit of a humorous story to (hopefully) lighten the mood in light of recent events.
5.22.2011 found me in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq; and my wife in Fort Hood, Texas. 5.22 just so happens to be our anniversary. We're talking over Skype when her cell phone rings, she picks it up, listens, and goes absolutely sheet white. I ask her what's wrong.
"Joplin just got leveled by an F5 tornado, the remnants went through the town that my momma and daddy live in, nobody can get in touch with them".
Times like that get things in perspective real quick, fast and in a hurry. I ended the call with "happyanniversaryloveyabye" so she could make the necessary phone calls. She had proof of life within about 6 hours, but it took a couple days before she was able to talk to them again. Somehow, I was lucky enough to be back on Skype with her when her Momma called for the first time after the storm. Wife sat and chatted for a bit before her entire demeanor changed and I heard "YOU PUT HIM ON THE (blank) PHONE RIGHT THE (blank)(blanking) NOW!!!!"
When the term "daddy's girl" gets thrown around, I always laugh because the sun rose and set on my FIL if you ask my wife. I can't disagree, I couldn't have asked for a better man to have as a FIL, and he's still sorely missed (we lost him in January of '19).
It quickly became obvious though that I had married the baby daughter of a 24-year (61-85) retired Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer.....because y'all, the saying "cuss like a Sailor" got a WHOLE new meaning that day when she found out that yes, the tornado had gone directly through their yard, and while her Momma was huddled in the bathtub under a mattress, her Daddy was standing on the front porch drinking a cup of coffee watching trees come down around him.
