Great story.
I still think it's weird that guys like Saban and Jimbo are so defensive about whether or not they pay for players (even though it's legal now). Old habits die hard but damn man, you sound insanely out of touch.
And with the old bag system, Saban could lightly recruit a Nico while going full bore for Arch. Now both are gone for him and he’s down to hoping Eli Holstein doesn’t like to profit from his likeness. The comparison to the bootleggers that were upset when prohibition ended is spot on. NIL has completely messed up the Saban business model (which Kirby also uses) and he sees the playing field leveling out.
That's what gets me about folks saying that UT has to pay players like Nico to come. He was going to get paid if he went to Alabama or UGA. NIL has simply leveled the playing field and Spyre was ready for it.
I think Saban is painting himself in a corner and there's going to be a lot of negative consequences for him. He's definitely making it harder for Alabama to have a successful NIL collective because they'll be directly at odds with his comments. You're also going to have some folks who will be more than happy to air the dirty laundry on his program when it comes to paying players.
He is a great coach. But, the cheating has been rampant. He still would have won a lot, but not nearly as much, IMO.As a result even people who bought the media lie all these years are starting to realize that saban cheated his way through every single game at bammer. The undeniable result is that there is no actual evidence that he can win on a level playing field. And he clearly doesn't think he can. Saban's "stolen valor" as a "genius" is exposed. He's just a privileged crook who benefitted from a double standard. That's why he couldn't win in the NFL -- he had to obey the same rules as every other team. He can't do it at bammer, either.
Yep, he very well could have gone after someone like Schiano.I’m a doubter of the Whittingham conspiracy…he would’ve been an epic program changer tho in my thinking. I know the Interim Kippy is a popular revisionist program savior but I doubt Hamilton wouldn’t chosen anybody better a season later and have no faith that Kippy would’ve salvaged that 2010 class. Acceptable if the next hire is a homerun…resubmit negative prediction. We took a beating top to bottom because the whole root was rotten. That wasn’t going to change with just a HC.
