I think his point was that we tend to hope for the best and assume these professionals know that they're doing. We often blindly follow them and boldly proclaim, "Well I trust Coach X's ability to evaluate talent!", as opposed to the individuals recruiting ranking or offer list. Then we are left with some garbage seasons, a dearth of actual talent, and the next coach comes in and immediately says, we have to upgrade the talent level across the board.
I get that. But we pay coaches to evaluate talent. They should be better at evaluating talent than recruiting nerds (most of whom don't actually "evaluate" anything, and even if they did, they don't have the skillset to do so). These coaches should especially be better at evaluating talent for their own system.
My point is, the fact that Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt failed at their jobs doesn't mean Heupel will. We shouldn't assume that this staff's evals are flops just because the prior staffs' were. But I also understand the other side of the coin that we shouldn't assume that they will pan out, either. Might do us all a lot of good to see how these kids play out on the field in CJH's system before making a determination either way. Until then, I remain hopeful that what we saw with the development of guys like Hooker, Tillman, Velus, etc. is a sign that guys who aren't necessarily unanimous 4-5 star recruits can perform well in this system.
