I think his point was that we tend to hope for the best and assume these professionals know that they're doing. We often blindly follow them and boldly proclaim, "Well I trust Coach X's ability to evaluate talent!", as opposed to the individuals recruiting ranking or offer list. Then we are left with some garbage seasons, a dearth of actual talent, and the next coach comes in and immediately says, we have to upgrade the talent level across the board.

I get that. But we pay coaches to evaluate talent. They should be better at evaluating talent than recruiting nerds (most of whom don't actually "evaluate" anything, and even if they did, they don't have the skillset to do so). These coaches should especially be better at evaluating talent for their own system.

My point is, the fact that Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt failed at their jobs doesn't mean Heupel will. We shouldn't assume that this staff's evals are flops just because the prior staffs' were. But I also understand the other side of the coin that we shouldn't assume that they will pan out, either. Might do us all a lot of good to see how these kids play out on the field in CJH's system before making a determination either way. Until then, I remain hopeful that what we saw with the development of guys like Hooker, Tillman, Velus, etc. is a sign that guys who aren't necessarily unanimous 4-5 star recruits can perform well in this system.

The previous staffs didn’t necessarily fail at identifying talent — more so developing them and putting them in positions to succeed. The players who came here with elite skillsets persevered due to their raw talent. Which is painfully evident with all of the Butch Jones UDFA’s with jobs in the NFL (Tuttle, Phillips, Mosely, Coleman etc). This staff has made some forgotten players NFL prospects in one year, which is something the previous three staffs never once did. That’s why I have hope.

Butch's teams were also always hurt. I'm convinced his S&C program was to blame. Tuttle, Phillips, Kirkland, JRM, Sutton, and so on and so forth...always hurt.

Did you know that if a bird gets in your garage they are too ****ing stupid to fly out even if you leave the garage door wide ****ing open? They just keep flying to the ceiling. And the only way to get them out is some long drawn out humane **** according to YouTube that no one has time for, or the more efficient shoot them with a BB gun until they drop to the floor then pick them up and chuck them out.

I learned that today.
My wife has been sitting me with a a BB gun. What are you trying to tell me?

I promise I am not picking on Warren Burrell. lol

I remember suggesting that his S&C ideas were responsible for the constant stream of injuries. Many here attacked me and said the two weren't related. One of Jones' biggest issues was that he thought he was smart enough to revolutionize college football.

Didn’t he fire Lawson after 2015?

Haven’t heard about many of these guys……just saying

My personal take at the time that hasn't really changed since was that no one was in charge of S&C except Lyle. His sleep studies and methods for producing "quick and powerful" OL's... I don't think he was wise enough to hire the right coach then let him do his job.

I took issue because I didn’t see where Lawson’s programs increased the risk for soft tissue injuries…still don’t. Freak occurrences are freaky.

I personally agree with your take.

Tennessee 2023 Football ScholarshipDistribution

Looks like the Tennessee folks updated the scholarship roster. I keep track of my own, but when this one is updated, it's more viewer friendly. Some of the positions for the recruits are off (Stallings at LB), but it gives a good look at what our needs our for depth as seniors leave. It does get confusing since a few of the seniors can stay for an extra covid year (e.g. Milton, Warren, Crawford, Banks, Beasley, Harrison, Young, Mitchell, etc.)

TE stands out as a big need for depth. I know we have some solid walk-ons there, but feels like we need at least 1 maybe 2 more in this class.

I don't think I ever laid the blame on the S&C coaches. As far as I remember, they were all professionals with good resumes and demonstrated ability.

It wasn't just a freak month or year. Those happen. High injury rates seemed to be a constant with Jones starting every August 1. I think his novel "techniques" and practice methods may have contributed too. IIRC, there was one year when they had a rash of injuries in August that were non-contact.... guys just running across the field and having injuries.
