Also, the self-sufficient tough guy doesn't really lend himself well to economies of scale. He first gets pressed to the fringes and then beyond the edge into nothingness. What replaces him is a creature that can survive in the prevailing system. For better or worse we are different animals living in a different world than our forebears.

My grandfather was a big, strong, hard-working man who couldn't read a lick. He broke his back laboring in a tobacco field so I wouldn't have to. I couldn't cut and spike tobacco to keep pace with him. He couldn't drive to downtown Nashville by himself even in the mid 1980s when that wasn't a big thing. Different animals, different world.

And as soon as a hard time hits. The weak fold. The strong survive. Darwin

We had a good run, but looks like we are fizzling out/striking out with remaining recruits on the board... hopefully we can still get Ramil, and a few other solid pickups before the end of the cycle... looks like we are adding some studs, but surprised we haven't landed a top-tier WR or DL... plenty of EDGE but not really any true DT's... Hopefully the portal will be our friend again...

Anyone on the board still that I am missing? Another DT, WR, LB, and CB would hit the spot!
Nope, I do not think we are ever going to recruit anyone again.

Pretty sure Darwin said "survival of the fittest" as opposed to strongest. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure he was using the evolutionary meaning of fitness as opposed to the cross-fit one.
The Darwinian definition actually had to do with reproduction, so a decent understanding of gender probably played into it.

For example: it's not always the loudest and strongest frogs that mate. Genetically inferior and younger frogs often mate by being smart. They get close to a loud male, intercept females on their way, and pretend they're the big tough guy they came to see.

I forget the term for it, but it's a reference to how in the days of yore the court jesters often fathered many royal children because while all the royal men did macho things and got drunk and distracted at gatherings the jesters would swoon the women.

Yep. Darwinian "fittest" is just about leaving behind progeny. There are some existential philosophical dilemmas tied to that.

I came in from work this evening and picked some green beans, a few tomatoes and several pods of hot pepper. Got the wife to cook them and make a pan of cornbread, fried some chicken. There’s nothing better imo, all that hard work is paying off. Still waiting on the corn to come in.

And, I believe that's from the Jaskier branch of biology:
