I agree with this.

Using the term “oriental” or “orient” is indicative of ignorance (and sometimes closed mindedness), but not necessarily racial prejudice.


It’s eye-roll-worthy, but not worthy of getting too worked up over.

I know what ya said. I just don’t see it as possible considering the scores for the top 5 last year is all. Really hard to get to that 300 range. I’ve played around with it just guessing at our commits and the highest total I can get (with those 3 included as well as wilhoite) is 275-280. Which is good for 8-12

But like I said, major ratings boosts could change that

Having lived in Asia for a decade, I have never heard the term “oriental” used at all... not once. Asian is completely accepted. When you can be more specific, you are more specific. I don’t even generally refer to everyone here in Thailand as “Thai’s”. There are multiple Hill tribes up here and there is a pride associated with being from your specific ethnic group. They wouldn’t be offended being called “Thai”, but to use the tribe communicates a deeper sense of understanding.

When someone knows I’m a Tennessean, that gets to my heart. If you say I’m a “farang”, derogatory term now almost universally accepted and used for all foreigners, it just shows you see my skin.

I get the feeling recruiting has been like a hot water kettle on the stove. Temperature had been rising though not much seems to be tangibly happening, but boiling point is near, and the noise is about to come

Late wife loved the show. Thought it was garbage, but the “Persian” sentiment was obvious throughout. Families that got out before the Iranian fundamentalist movement identify as Persian.

And that's the entire point and all that really matters, what different groups of people want to be called. Just because someone from another part of the world might not understand why or "get it" is their problem. If a group of people want to be called Persian or Asian or whatever, call them that then. It's pretty simple, really.

"But now I have to change my vocabulary and learn a new word?! That's ridiculous!" No, not really. You're the one being ridiculous.

That is all well and good. The thing that gets me is when someone outside the victim class gets offended. We have a lot of that today when people outside the class get offended when it's up to the victim class to decide what they want to be called.
