Yeah it is. We have been strapped financially and facility upgrades have misplaced our priority and given power to boosters because we NEED their support for unnecessary upgrades.

 i'm ok with upgrading athletic facilities to maintain a level of competitiveness with our peers.

but overall, you're correct. the cart was placed before the horse in a lot of areas, and we have not had anyone administratively since Dickey that handled the boosters appropriately.

I guess you are going to say Haslam.
Keep in mind I am agreeing with you that boosters not getting out of the way is a problem

I just value the importance of upgraded facilities when it comes to recruiting. Imo upgrades are necessary

they are, but ziti is right. we've been on a bonanza of upgrades to all kinds of facilities that are NOT revenue producing sports, that contribute nothing to football recruiting, and honestly, haven't contributed all that much to the overall winning of this athletic department as a whole. there's not a whole lot of other sports we're competing at a high level at, over an extended period of time as a result of any of these upgrades.

add to that the the additional academic facilities upgrades, also financed largely by the same family, and their influence is not just heavily in athletics....the whole university depends on that dime now.

and decisions get made accordingly as a result.

Big donors donate big dollars to build big buildings with their names on them in big letters. Neyland Stadium already has someone else's name on it. This phase of renovations is different from the last phase. It doesn't directly benefit most donors and some are cutting back to express displeasure with UT leadership and the lost decade. The Haslams are the only major donors stepping up to bankroll this phase of renos.

"The Lost Decade"

that's gonna stick.

Good post. Agree with most everything you stated.

I was born and raised a Reds fan. My dad played low minors ball after WW II and I played in college. I've had many personal experiences with the old BRM players along with KCR's for a couple of years at their ST facilities in FL in the early 80's. Learned a few things from the experiences.

Both families are highly successful at what they do as their primary endeavors. They sincerely want the best to happen IMO. But both are complete failures at what they are passionate about in the sporting world. They don't think right to win consistently at a high level. The success in their primary careers does not translate from one to the other. They think they can daily manage and call all the major shots because they do it in their primary careers. That's boastful pride talking. It is rare for it to work out well that way.

You also cannot choose your buddies to run things (Reds and Vols) or nepotize your way into it either like the Reds have. Whether they realize it or not by doing so they are effectively saying the org is a hobby, their personal toy. The fans beg to differ. So the fans go away and the org sinks lower. Even if they view the sports orgs the same way as they do their primary businesses, they are effectively killing their chances of succeeding by being involved in the day to day decision making. At some point they need to acknowledge they stink at it. Help with the money, hire the best available, and get out of the way. Just be fans and let the professionals do what they do. Hold them accountable for success and if they are not, fire them and hire better. Had the fans not stepped in at UT, the failure would have continued. The fans are stepping in with the Reds. They have stopped going to games.

:hi:

I think this describes Jerry Jones as well

I've read a few complaints about Bev on the academic side. Mentions of her being unconcerned and somewhat aloof.

While the Haslam connection is mentioned more often (for obvious reasons), is it possible she just wasn't good at her job?

But as we see with coaching changes, when someone gets fired, all the wolves come out of the woods.

yeah, i think it's possible. she never came off as confident in her press conferences. out the gate, she seemed to be in over her head. she won a lot of points with canning currie and hiring fulmer. that in and of itself doesn't mean she was a good chancellor of academics. though, she was certainly highly thought of upon her hiring, and you'd think she'd of been thoroughly vetted prior to hiring....

so yeah, it's certainly possible.

i still think the timing is weird, and we'll really get the rest of the story when replacements are hired, and what, if any, connection they have to HOH.

I would say it’s likely she was bad at her job. Pretty much everyone over there is bad at their job.

She wasn’t fired for poor performance in reality though. She was fired because she went against the grain.

It is definitely possible, but I also don't believe very much in coincidences. Heather and Tyler were just clattering on about how she must have been bad and Heather said she thought she got the job because she was female. Really strange. Neither of them mentioned the Haslams or the outsourcing at all. That is a relevant discussion to have but they were ignoring it completely.

I think it's a chicken or the egg type thing. Some subscribe to the "build it and they will come" philosophy where some believe winning will bring in the money and then facility improvements come about. I tend to believe if you win money takes care of itself. I recall a church meeting one time when we were going to spend all this money on some outside fund raising program. I told them if the church is in the right place, money won't be an issue.

of course they are. i'm not expecting much out of wnml on that side of the story.

Hey I need a facility upgrade at my house, where is my carpenter?

WNML had one of the on-air guys from the Ticket in Dallas on yesterday to talk about Witten. Made me so miss the Ticket. No hick call-ins. No Heather. Just good radio. Sigh.
