And it's not necessarily about the "money being there." It's about priority. The program never made it a priority to hire a big time coach. As Ziti referred to it- the culture.

The point is when the focus is on upgrading facilities and not on winning, it hurts the program and the university. You can't convince me that MH was focused on winning when he hired Derek Dooley and y left Coach Pearl twisting in the wind.

Can you blame them? I've asked this question many times.... what motivation does the administration to emphasize winning? Despite the fact that our football has been average at best and pathetic at worst for the last decade, it is one of the most profitable in the country. As long as people keep throwing money their way regardless of performance, there is zero motivation to change. From a business perspective it's a winning formula.

The Cubs did this for years and years. They knew they had loyal fans and were focused on only the bottom line and never on winning.

Man I hate the offseason....

Thanks for sharing.
That's interesting

I recall many here saying that was MG just making excuses for Jones. Wonder how true it is

i think griff is a giant bag of you know what.

but what's in this is not an opinion.

Remarkable statistics. And I read over and over again the respect JP has for Fulmer.

yep...it's hard to ignore it at this point. he gets it. he's comfortable with who he is, and how he does things, and enough so, that Fulmer's shadow matters not.

it's a resource, like most everything else he sees here, and has done since arriving.

Butch Jones was allowed to bring the staff he wanted, and he was given the money he needed to bring in Shoop and Scott. The ROI got progressively worse on his personnel decisions, and it became obvious UT wasn't spending its way out of the mess Butch created while the program was under his watch. Both camps knew an expensive divorce was coming. The mistake wasn't not giving Butch whatever he wanted that last year; it was not parting ways with him a season sooner. That's where the cheapness cost us.

Yeah off field staff spending wasn't going to save Butch from his on field blunders.

i buy that. i just think it's interesting to look at what we have spent on similar commodities among the coaching ranks, compared to the competition at the highest level.

that does not mean you bring in a guy that was racing go carts, and give him a Ferrari.

The only one that might have was the S&C coach. You could argue he made a bad decision with the initial termination, but if he was not allowed to hire a full time coach after the firing, then that was a problem.

Agreed for sure

You could here the resentment in having to talk to the amateur hour in his voice.

He has developed a haute personality when acting as an expert. Makes it hilarious when he effs up. :)

Fair enough. It's a shame that people don't have the courage to tell one another that something is wrong in their relationships or that they've fallen for someone else. If we did a lot of relationships might be salvaged/fixed once the initial screaming and crying died down.

Matters of the heart are damned difficult things tho. I don't envy anyone going through issues there and even though I'd advise that this father never put his dirty laundry out there because his kids matter more, I do understand the place he's coming from. Betrayal always hurts.

I think social media played a small part in shaping the UT athletic department last year. It's just the world we live in now. UT fans got their reward and it looks like this guy got his revenge. This stuff cuts both ways. Social media can be a *****.

For the transfer rule, I don't think that there should be any restrictions on scholarship money regardless of where the athlete transfers. If it is not for hardship or other special circumstance, I still think all transfers should sit out a year, including grad transfers.

I do too...Allowing unlimited transfers would be a disaster imo.

Edit: I disagree about grad transfers.

Tennessee exited spring practice with just 10 available scholarship offensive lineman — and that’s including a pair of former defensive tackles who flipped sides of the ball halfway through camp. While reinforcements will arrive this summer, the Vols are still searching for immediate help up front, especially considering the continued uncertainty surrounding Trey Smith’s status.

The Vols are scouring the grad transfer and JUCO market, and could sign as many as two offensive lineman this summer, per sources. With spring practices over and finals wrapping up, too, many players have already announced their intentions to find a new landing spot for 2018. Others could follow suit shortly.

Among those already on the market, Tennessee does not have any current interest in Georgia’s Pat Allen, who Will Friend recruited to Athens, and isn’t expected to pursue Florida’s Andrew Mike, either. Meanwhile, several potential targets are off the board (Justin Murphy to UCLA, Toriano Roundtree to Colorado State and Breontae Matthews to UNC Greensboro).

Here are a handful of grad transfers the Vols make take a look at, though.

1. OG Dallas Warmack, Alabama

2. OT John Cook, Central Arkansas

3. OT Kevin Feder, Ohio State

4. OG Terrell Cuney, Texas

Other names available include Brinkley Jolly from Wyoming and Antonio Riles from Florida.

I like those 2. The rest are pretty meh.

I'm not really liking the Feder guy. And the Texas guy couldn't win the job on a Texas oline that may have been worse than ours last year.

What do I know but the Davenport demotion given the rumblings during the AD fiasco and coaching search strikes me as mean spirited. This goes to the politics of the thing so I guess I don't have much more to say.
