I love Dobbs, but Tee was a waaay better passer. Dobbs was a better runner easily, but looking at the complete passer, no doubt that Tee is clearly better than Dobbs.
Manning obviously ahead of dobbs and probably Schuler. But i would argue that dobbs had a lot less around him and a lesser headcoach. I think the case could be made that dobbs meant more to his team than any other player in school history.
Take manning off our team and we win a title. Take dobbs off and we have the worst season in school history. (Obviously they are more variables but still)
Obviously a huge talent differential...so not comparable. Id say that Manning made whichever WRs he worked with top level.
Take the most prolific passer in the school's history, who's only flaws were losing to Memphis and never beating the best Florida team's in their history (to that point), and we win a title?
Holy...
Clausen is the only QB in the last 20 years with a winning record against Florida...hell, it might be closer to 30...but that was because Clausen had the coldest damn disposition of any QB in our history. The dude couldn't be rattled, a trait that makes him arguably the third best QB in our history.
But take the hands down greatest QB in our history and we all of a sudden beat Florida and win a national title?
No.
No. Too many games did Dobbs throw the game losing interception. Didn't happen with IcemanI think Ice man was good but he had some absolutely loaded teams around him. I think you put dobbs with those Rosters and we at least win a couple sec titles.
Its the same thing with the 98 team. Manning is worlds away better than Tee. But we transitioned to a run oriented ball control team and the rest is history.
I could put up a decent argument that Dobbs had better WRs talent-wise... we've had some studs come through the past few years that never really developed
Joey Kent, Marcus Nash, Peerless Price, Nilo Sylvan vs Jauan Jennings, Josh Malone, Von Pearson, Pig Howard, Jason Croom, Marquez North
Obviously the Manning guys put up better stats but length/athleticism of the WRs is prolly in the Butch corner
Basically, he bases everything off of numbers. He looks at recruiting and the Vols are top 25 in talent, really top 15 which is why they are in his tier 3. Then he grades the coordinators based upon their numbers. Vols have a highly ranked DC (I'm assuming he's factoring Pruitt in here and not just Sherrer).
His conclusion then, based upon numbers alone judged by coaching and talent, is that we have the talent and the coaching to compete for a national championship but not win it.
