Scheme around it like add a blocking TE etc.

Cowboys tried that when Tyron Smith went down last year. Six sacks later, Chaz Green is a coined cuss word in the Cowboys locker room, Adrian Clayborn sets a Falcons record six sacks later and demands franchise player money. You can’t reinvent the wheel by making it rounder. Next year with Wright or Morris? Yeah. Now? Why do you hate our quarterbacks?

Obviously I don't hate our QBs. I have faith in Will Friend to fix the issues with the OL. He will fix it. We do have blocking TEs now and our RBs will be able to block.

I also think that we will be fine at the OT position no matter who is there. No one last year would have even guessed we would need Smith at OT.

So to just say it like it is a thing now because he was there is a little silly to me. He was a natural OG and he plays that position the best.

We should be able to find a natural OT and play him there and that's what they will do. You don't have to be the best player to be a good OT. You just have to be able to stick with your guy and ride him around the QB.

I don't understand why you would move Smith a guy who has proven he can take a double team and win it and stick him in a position where he is isolated against a speed rusher / or a finesse DE.

You stick him in the middle with the big uglies and make teams double team him so that our O-Line as a whole has pressure relieved from them because you have one kid who can dominate the middle. (Just makes sense to me to leave him in the middle)

We have enough talent to put someone in the LT position, that will do good at that position. If it doesn't pan out maybe you do move Smith to LT but I wouldn't make that adjustment until it needs to be made.

It needs to be made. We don’t have another LT that can handle a decent edge rusher in isolation. A run blocking TE needs to be helping the RUNNING GAME, not diving at the knees of the edge rusher living in the backfield in a last desperate attempt to keep the quarterback alive.

And where did you get this “natural OG” malarkey from? The experts who converted him from the position that he dominated all the way to All-American status?

Trey Smith is a generational talent on the Offensive line. You don’t put him on the inside. Unless you have other tackles who are nfl caliber. He should’ve been at LT from day one and come this year he would be a top tackle in the conference.

I don't understand how you say it needs to be made with certainty at this point.

They still have Fall Practice to get better and Smith wasn't in the Orange & White game and the guys filling those OT positions did a pretty decent job.

However, again I am not the end all be all I am just giving my opinion. Teams were able to send guys off the outside hard because they didn't have to worry about our pass game.

If our WRs learn to get open and ours QBs learn to get the ball out that fixes a lot of the problems to. Again, im just an idiot though.

This isn't true at all. When we signed Smith plenty of people thought he was our LT of the future and that OG was just the best spot for him to start off as a freshman since (in theory, at least) we had plenty of upperclassment at OT going into 2017.

This may be the case in HS football, but facing SEC pass rushers is a different story. The fact that we haven't had an OT since Juwan James and Tiny Richardson who could reliably stick with their guy and ride him around the QB kind of points towards the idea that OT is still a problem for this squad and it's harder than you're making it out to be.

Because at 320 lbs he still one of our best athletes on the OL and probably our best at not getting made to look like a fool by speed or power rushers.

DL get double teamed. OL don't get double teamed. Not really sure what you're talking about here.

What talent do we have at OT that shouldn't be worried about? Richmond, at the absolute best he's shown in his career, has been mediocre. Tatum has never looked good at OT and still needs some time to develop. Brooks doesn't look ready either. Jamir Johnson has upside, but is still undersized. Hall has been decent, but we're still not sure when he'll be back healthy and how much he'll be able to contribute. I'm not expecting him to do much more than be able to add occasional depth.

If we put Smith at one OT spot and Richmond at the other, then we'll have one OT we know we can rely on and one that we'll have to give help from time to time. Any other combination of OTs likely means we have 2 OTs we need to give help with TEs/RBs. And we can't just go max protect all the time and expect to have many guys get open in the intermediate/deep passing game.

Richmond looked OK in pass pro in the spring. Other OTs, not so much.

This is what happens when your Guard can't handle a bull rush. (This is also worse than someone coming off the edge)

Defenses, specifically pass rush, are so advanced now that their really isn’t a “most important” position on the OL. Most of the best Edge guys in the NFL like Khalil Mack and von Miller almost exclusively rush off the right tackle. Then you have these hybrid DTs like Aaron Donald or Leonard Williams who are so quick that rush up the middle. So it really doesn’t matter where smith is but i would just prefer him to be on the outside.

Our scheme is going to help our OL more than anything. We will live off screens and play action so it’s gonna be hard for teams to just pin their ears backs and rush to a spot. Like they did the last few years.

Did “a pretty good job” in a glorified two hand touch game. If a member of the current roster miraculously becomes capable of handling the spot, I may reconsider. I just think we have way more potentially good options at OG than adequate options at OT. I wasn’t planning on calling you an idiot but your persistence wore me down. :)

Truth.

He's our LT this year if healthy.

Eagles best Tackle is their right tackle. Game is always evolving

Sorry, should have specified or used a better term.

What I meant by this is on a blitz usually what you try and do is have the DL player take a guy out of the picture such as the Guard and send the rush behind him. Smith has shown that he can stop this in the middle he has blocked two people at one time, multiple times.

That's what I meant. Sorry for the incorrect term.

I just watched the video Freak put up on Pruitt's talk at SEC Media Days. Now I want Pruitt to go yell at Pollack while drunk on Pollack's front lawn. Pollack would cower in the corner of his closet.

It would be great if he just kept yelling CORNBREAD on Pollack's front lawn.

Not gonna lie, even like last year where our win max is gonna be 7-8, I'm really excited about this year and think our team will be much better to watch. I dreaded last year because we were gonna be bad and most people knew it.

I agree with the last portion and I understand where you are coming from on the first portion. The coaches will do what is best either way so I believe we will be fine.

I really love the conversation about how many wins we will have this year. I want us to win them all but what I really want is to limit our injuries this year. Injuries to key positions, will determine just how far we go this year. Got my fingers crossed. I hope the new S&C coach is worth all that money.

Agree here. I’m not optimistic on the final win total, but I think we will be a lot more competitive. Last year was terrible. Towards the end of the season I stopped watching full games - turned them off once they started getting out of hand. It was clear half those guys quit. I tried once or twice this summer to go back and watch those games out of curiosity but they were so bad I couldn’t. GT is the only entertaining game from last year, and that one had no business being entertaining.

I’m excited about the season and the fresh start. We’ve got a few guys that have the talent to really differentiate themselves in Tennessee history and I hope they do (T.Smith; N.Warrior, etc.). Exciting to see the run game too - I think Chandler is going to go off in a game or two this year.

Not to mention, Butch had them all worried about getting hurt. Every practice, every workout was tailored to injury prevention. The players were tense and unfocused, which tends to cause more injuries. Self-fulfilling prophecy. CJP said he'd never seen a program built around injury prevention and immediately changed everything. The players seem looser and more focused, with clear expectations-- and no major injuries since the new staff arrived.

That's scientific. Professor Daniel Kahneman wrote a book called, "Thinking Fast and Slow". He creates an analogy of the way the brain works neurologically by breaking it into 2 systems. System #2 (Slow) is for learning new things, reasoning, following complicated processes, etc. System #1 (Fast) is instinctual, automatic, "Just do it". Playing football in the SEC in System 2 mode will lead to both more mistakes and more injuries, not to mention - chronic frustration. System 2 is for learning in the meeting rooms and practicing techniques, scheme assignments, etc. In the game you have to shut down System 2 and (if you're prepared) trust System 1. SEC football has to be played in survival mode, fight or flight, on the edge. Your brain in surrvival mode is wired through you nervous system to every fiber in your body. Not only will properly developed muscle memory allow you to get "in ithe zone" the brain's primary System 1 function (your survival) will likely keep you from injury. The key to getting into survival mode is simple. You just have to trust yourself and your training/preparation. Its scientific and even cavemen understood that.
