What did they say about him?

They were talking about fit at first. They talked about how Mullen has a lot of Butch Jones qualities. He said at media days something like “no coach has ever gone on the road against their former team in the same year.” That’s very Jonesy of a statement. Then talked about him trying to act cool, even tho he’s not, with the Jordan’s and wake boarding. They said that the pressure at Florida will get to home and he’ll be out. He won’t fit there with the preemptive excuses and the antics. He’ll be in a pressure cooker that basically caused Spurrier and Meyer to quit and Mac and Muschamp to fold cause they couldn’t handle it.

They also questioned his recruiting down there because he isn’t a fit and he is struggling. They also talked about how he’s inconsistent and a slow starter. Florida won’t tolerate that.

But they also questioned his coaching ability. Only time Mullen ever did any good was with Dak. Is Mullen really a QB whisperer or is Dak just an extreme athlete and talent? He doesn’t have a good QB in Florida and no one who fits that Dak/Tebow style. Without one how good will Mullen be, especially since his cupboard isn’t stacked like the media act like.

They made great points.

VRN98 guy put in a 247 class calculator for guys he’s “hearing about the most” and it has us with 19 commits and currently the number 4 class in the country. Hope he’s right about this one

Top 10-12 class and a bowl game would be just what the doc ordered

I went back and looked at Clemson’s classes because I was bored. Leading up to their national championship, their classes were as follows in the 247 composite:

2016- 11th, 1 5*, 11 4*, 7 3* avg 90.3
2015- 9th, 3 5*, 9 4*, 12 3*, avg 89.12
2014- 16th, 0 5*, 10 4*, 9 3*, avg 88.69
2013- 15th, 1 5*, 10 4*, 11 3*, avg 88.46

That isn’t that impressive. There are no top 3 classes there and their highest avg is only 90. I think the big difference between them and us is that they hit on guys and we missed on a lot. Thats why Pruitt’s evaluations are so important rather than star rankings. They also developed those guys, Butch didn’t. We also know that they have an easier schedule than we do year in and year out. But they still beat Bama for a championship and shut out Ohio State.

We will recruit better than this imo while Pruitt is here. Currently Clemson is 10th with 18 players with an avg of 88.83. We are 18th with 14 players for an avg of 89.67. Our average is currently better than theirs.

We do have to beat Bama and Georgia will be tough, but there’s no reason talent wise that we shouldn’t be as good or better than Clemson if we recruit like this. I think any of us would be happy with that.

I also think Pruitt will bring a physicality that we haven’t seen in a long time.

Good stuff. I think our biggest challenge is going to be the schedule. The SEC is gonna be tough.... again.... with this influx of coaches. We will be a tougher out than we have been. I at least feel confident in saying that.

I'm not asking for a XV-Nulla season, although I wouldn't mind if that is what happens. I'm asking for better coaching in practice (which we already know the players are getting), better in-game coaching & play calling, and a desire from the whole team (players and coaches) to beat the other opponent no matter what. No more letting off the gas from the offense or defense.

Completely agree.

I’m not saying we’re going to compete this year. Butch missed on/underdeveloped a lot of players on our team and it’s the first year. I’m saying going forward I expect us to recruit as well or better than Clemson with a staff who can coach/develop them. No reason we can’t be that good or better imo

Really need to move to a 9 game conference schedule. It would help us because more SEC East will have to play Bama. Until then, I don't see us winning the SEC East for a while. Our schedule is too difficult compared to others.

3&out hour 2 Wednesday has me convinced that Mullen is Butch Jones 2.0 at Florida. He’ll be terrible there

I think he’s way too good Xs and Os wise to be butch. Florida is just going to have to tamper their expectations. They had two of the best coaches in CFB history within the same decade. That never happens. It’s like going from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers. It basically never happens.

Just one game. Sweep the east and 95% of the time you’re in.

If this were the case, why is Moorhead recruiting better? The general sense I get down here is that Mullen got kids who 1) were going to go to MSU anyways or 2) got paid (i.e. Leo Lewis). Otherwise, he was kind of awkward and abrasive, and didn't like recruiting. He did, however, create a football culture with an edge and a big chip on the shoulder.

However, Moorhead is already recruiting above and beyond what Mullen ever did, even coming off the season where they were ranked #1 for a stretch and had Dak Prescott. A buddy of mine coaches football down here, and said a large part of it is that Moorhead is a pure ball coach who connects a lot better with high school coaches.

Maybe it's because I'm an alum of UT, and I teach as MSU, but I see some parallels in that Mullen seems like a Butch Jones personality that could actually coach, and that Cohen (the former baseball coach and current MSU AD) and Fulmer (former coach) went out and hired the best ball coaches they could find and weren't interested in gimmicks and slogans.

Based on what, his first few months on the job? Moorhead might out recruit Mullen, and good for State if he does but, Butch recruited at a high level the first few years that he was here and look that turned out. Mullen changed the culture of the program by bringing it to heights it had never seen prior to his arrival. That can't be discounted, regardless of his perceived personality short comings. From all accounts, Dak loved the guy...I dunno, I'm a UT first and foremost.

And, I'm not saying anything bad about Moorhead but, what Mullen did over his tenure was unparalleled. Sherrill won the West, but his success wasn't sustained like Mullen's was at State and he left the cupboard bare bones and with a .500 record. Mullen leaves a pretty decent roster...

Congrats on teaching at State. My parents are both alumni. I grew up going to Starkville, not Knoxville. I had to turn 18 to finally start going to UT games on a regular basis.

:hi: Thanks for the summary. They do seem to have some points worth pondering.

He’s definitely a better coach than Butch. They were talking about his personality and this his fit with Florida. They won’t tamper their expectations. But also, is Mehlen that good or did he just land two of the best QBs to ever play in this league? We’re gonna see because he doesn’t have a QB right now

In-game coaching decisions are the big unknown to me. It proved to be a major issue with Butch, Dooley, and to a far lesser extent, Fulmer. I just want to outcoach the other team on Saturdays. That’s what guys like Mullen do best.

Does he tho? 9-4, 6-7, 9-4, 10-3, 7-6, 8-5, 7-6, 9-4. One 10 win season and, if I recall, LSU and Auburn were bad that year. He seems to be an 8-9 with coach at Ms State, even with Dak Prescott. I’m not sure I’d call that him outcoaching guys. He also has some bad losses as well. What’s his best win at State? I think what Herman did at Houston was far more impressive than Mullen at State. I get it, it’s Ms state, but all those 6, 7, and 8 win seasons don’t scream “outcoaching other teams” to me

You can’t hold that against him tho. Especially dak. He found and groomed him. I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure he was the lead recruiter for cam newton too when he came to Florida. Nick fitz is also damn good so he just has a knack for finding QBs. I will be shocked if by next year florida isnt getting solid QB play.

Florida’s lack of facilities i think are finally catching up with them. Their new indoor facility is literally just a warehouse. It’s a dump.
