I hear ya and mustve missed points by others but I just dont like the fact that the schedule isnt created equal for all. I wouldnt mind if every team played each other every year and OOC games reduced to 1.
Issue is that it would hurt small schools tremendously.
Still can't do that, even if you wanted to. You can't even play everyone each year with 14 teams in the conference and a 12 game schedule, much less throw in an OOC game to boot.
There are so many issues to consider, it's almost mind-boggling. You need to play every one in your division, the historical rivalries, striving for fair/equal schedules, quality OOC games raise interest in the sport, small schools rely on games against the Bamas & UTs of the world to keep their athletic departments afloat, blah, blah, blah.
If you want to get as close to fair as possible, you have to eliminate the cross-divisional rivalry games (e.g., Bama) and go to 9 game conference schedules. The extra 3 conference games will be rotated, meaning you will play everyone else in the conference every 2 - 3 years, and you will play a road game and home game against everyone every 4 - 6 years.
As tough as the current scheduling is on UT, it's worse for Auburn. They have a more difficult division schedule, including a game against Bama, plus Georgia is their rivalry game.
And one last thought...the cycles we count on to balance things unfortunately don't even come close to doing so. As a result, fairness in scheduling is a pipe dream.
