Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

Having slept on it, a couple of my random useless post game thoughts:

  • I kind of lied, didn't sleep worth a damn last night. I'm 40 years old and should know better than to let losses in a game that mostly has zero direct affect on my life bother me. Nevertheless, this one stung bad. I live in NC. Travel to SC on occasion for work, and as such have a ton of dumb gamecock fan friends. Good people overall, but obnoxious football fans. Add to it, and I detest Muschamp. Lets just say losing this game hurt worse than Florida for me.
  • There is definitely a line in the sand on this forum for some people - Pro JG or Anti JG. If you're Anti JG then you bash him unjustifiably, IMO. Personally, I'm pro JG. He's not Manning, he's not a flawless QB. In fact I can openly admit he has a number of flaws. Needs more pocket awareness is one. Needs to make quicker decisions as well. But the kid can make all the throws, he can throw a bullet with a blitzer in his face, he stays calm no matter what is going on around him. He's a good leader. Most of all, and he's the best quarterback we have (tallest midget or not). He'll be the best QB we have next year too.
  • Now I've been on forums since 2001, so I'm wise enough to know that once someone picks a side on a "debate," they'll rarely switch. Expect the JG bashers and JG fans to remain as such no matter what happens going forward.
  • Good news is - his flaws are mostly correctable. Most notably his timeliness making decisions. Remember this is his third offensive coordinator. The lack of continuity with this team obviously has an effect. I think once has finishes this season and has another spring/fall practice under this scheme and with these coaches, it will do wonders for him. The pocket presence.... well, that seems like something you either have or don't. He's lacking there. Fortunately, we'll have a better offensive line next year so it won't be as glaring.
  • As far as his performance last night... I can't pin this loss on him at all. He floated a few to Palmer, but all night long he took what the defense gave him. He made some great throws under duress. Had zero turnovers. And once again kept peeling himself off the ground shot after shot. Enough of JG
  • Offensive line held up well for the most part. Aided a lot by quick throws, but I would still have to say it was their best performance of the season, even if that isn't saying much.
  • Niehaus looks like he weighs 250lbs.
  • Drew Richmond played a very good game IMO
  • There's a handful of players who I can't wait until they're no longer on the roster. Linebackers and secondary mostly. I don't care to call out specific players but god I can't wait until we get players in here that Pruitt and staff recruited and coached up.
  • Defense overall was manhandled. We were getting blown off the ball, and their mediocre running backs were bowling over people. Every time they were tackled, they fell forward for another yard or more. It was disgusting to watch.
  • I felt pretty good at the half, even after the last second quarter TD we gave up. I don't remember exactly when, but it was pretty early in the third when I knew we were going to lose the game. Helton called a great game trying to compensate for the OL, but for the most part it was a smoke and mirrors offense that wasn't sustainable in the long run. Every scoring drive seemed like a 15 play methodical drive with several too close for comfort third down conversions. Conversely, when they were on offense, they were either gashing us in the run game, or making big plays in the passing game. We had no answer. So it was just a matter of time before we didn't convert a third down and they flipped the game.
  • I didn't like the 4th and 7 decision. IIRC it would've been a 52 yarder, but Cimaglia drilled a 45 yarder that wouldve been good from that distance. Just feel like attempting that kick had a better shot at being successful than trying to get 7 yards on a pass when most of our passing yards were coming off screens.
  • I realize you have to be kind of retarded to cheer for a team called the cocks in the first place, but do those retards not realize how moronic that rooster crow sounds on every third down?
  • How do the refs not even review that fumble? Their logic being they called forward progress? Uh, he fumbled while forward progress was in progress. Clear recovery by UT as well. That made zero sense to me and was obviously huge.
  • Hats off to Fil Aimes - ran hard and looked like he should've stayed at RB. Really impressed by his performance.
  • Tim Jordan also had his best game since WVU.
  • I know we got a first year, first time head coach. I know we're coming off the worst season in Vols history. I know the lack of S&C, coaching, development, and overall piss poor recruiting by the intern has turned us into a shell of a program and that the rebuild wouldn't be overnight. I know all this.... but this has been a hard season to watch. It's hard for me to be optimistic about our remaining games and for the first time all season, I seriously doubt we make a bowl game.
  • I feel sick. I thought typing this long winded ramble would help, but it hasn't at all. I hate that SC won. I hate that we made their homecoming. I hate that they had that kind of come from behind victory and that crowd atmosphere while hosting a lot of guys were also recruiting. That was embarrassing.
  • Go Vols

It was also the wrong call. Do the math. Pruitt lost that one.
And if BC misses that field goal, then the same posters are on here this morning saying that he made the wrong call. I can guarantee you that I know a certain coach who would have punted the ball, and hoped we could somehow get it back, even though Our defense had not come close to stopping them the entire second half, minus the fumble at the goal line that should’ve been ours.

And to add one more thing, I will not gripe about my head coach believing in his players and trying to win the game, especially when he fully saw that our defense cannot get a stop. Now, if our defense have been playing lights out all night, then I would bet he attempts the field goal.

It's not like we can go out and pick up a QB On wavers . Their playing the best QB we have. Better oline will help a lot next year.
JG would make a lot of Olines in the NCAA look bad. His failure to get rid of the ball fast , and lack of reading defenses is really showing. He's had 3 years to improve and hasn't. His weaknesses only hurts the offense twice as worse. If he's the qb next year we will be in trouble. Hope I'm wrong or he gets recruited over.

Don't worry. You are.

We opened the proverbial checkbook last fall to a lot of guys and they said no thanks. Most see this as a dead end job
Who? Gundy? Who else? Texas A&M opened the checkbook. We had a sham search that somehow led to the doorstep of a person with the only type of baggage that the administration couldn't stomach. Fulmer didn't go after anyone of consequence. Maybe it was too late by the time Fulmer got involved, so I'm not blaming him. It's going to take a miracle to salvage the 2019 class and without a really good incoming class, this staff is toast by 2021 at the latest.

Drew Richmond had a little bit of dog in him last night which was a nice surprise. I find it hard to be too harsh on the rest of the OL that started..... they simply are out of their element. They should have never been recruited to Tennessee. Jahmir might get there but my goodness how many more slight linemen do we need.

Some of our fans need to go back and relive the November coaching search. Nobody wanted this job for a reason. We up and turn on Pruitt in year 1, our next coaching search is going to look ten times worse.

I would point out that there is a coach who might be in the top ten this week who wanted the job, but it doesn’t matter. I think it’s completely justifiable despite what the coach sniffers think to say we look better as a team from game 1, but this is truly the first game where coaching lost it for us.

And how exactly were they "outcoached"? Because a lot of the players they have to work with are slow, football stupid..and..soft...doesn't mean Pruitt got "outcoached"..

I missed the long pass in real time but saw a replay. Didn’t really have much to do with speed. They bit on the PA. Taylor actually ran down Edwards.

Players were out of position on defense too. Some of it was execution.

Everyone who watched the game with any objectivity and, perhaps, sobriety understands this but it mitigates against the narrative that we struck gold with this staff and everything will be peachy when we get those 25 guys who play right.

I think you can get a decent view through Pruitt's eyes by watching his decisions. I knew the second he was ok with kneeling before the half, we were likely losing the game. I don't think he is risk averse either. He's displayed gambling many times which I agreed with most of those gambles. At the end of the half told me he was content, which is never good.

Also, I thought for the most part Helton called a decent game. We were killing them with the screens and our run game was effective. Then SC said no more screens. At that point helton had no answers.

Defensively, SC decided to just test our will and play big boy football. We failed the test, miserably.
Overall, I think we have average to below average talent with coaches that have potential but for the most part have a lot of growing up to do.

The only win I feel confident about is Charlotte, after that I don't see us beating MZ, or KY, and Vandy is doubtful. All are playing decent or good football and we are not.

I'm feeling like we might make a bowl in 2019. Recruiting should be our focus as I think it is CJPs. I think Pruitt's goal this year was more about installing his system and culture this year at the expense of winning. Not that he doesn't want to win, it's just not at the top of his priorities this year. He knows wins next year and beyond are more important than this year.

If I were Fulmer, I’d give all the coaches a one year extension and a small raise after yesterday. Just stare down our fanbase and say to them: these are our guys. We are completely invested in them. If you don’t like it, we don’t care.

Hopefully Fulmer has the fortitude to stick with the plan through the long haul.

The recruiting class likely will be mediocre on a whole this year but we have to take the Kentucky approach. No one believes in us anymore so we need to roll up our sleeves and earn back respect slowly over time.

There are no quick fixes.

Maybe we can bump up the buyout to 35 million too while we are making stupid business decisions out of spiteful rather well than sense.

That's why Pruitt called TO at one point on a 3rd down call and lit into Bituli for not aligning every properly.

If you play that card now, then we'll have to throw down a lifetime contract, a street name, and a statue just outside Neyland if we lose to Vandy.
