Charlotte is a little better than expected. It's a great opportunity to give the young guys PT and let them learn. See what guys like JJP, Shrout and the FR linemen can do. Let recruits see they can play early. We don't need a big W that will impress no one-- we need to develop guys at all positions.

It's Charlotte. How on Earth would that tell us anything?

Open up the play calling a bit. Give KC opportunities to throw downfield. See what he can do with his arm. Get him some reps and gauge how he can manage this O.

The perimeter passes and screens with the occasional long pass with JG is not going to get it done against Mizz, UK, and Vandy.

Nothing to lose by letting KC start.

Chip Kelly has two wins.
Chip Kelly's 3 seasons as a college football hfc include 3 conference championships, 2 Rose Bowls, and a BCSCG appearance. If anyone has earned the right to expect patience, it would be him. Pruitt hasn't done jack shite other than suck on the hind teat of some really good head coaches with loaded rosters. I don't know why you seem to think that mentioning one excuses the other. Apples and oranges.

Something about him impressed those "really good coaches" enough to give him a job.

I actually think they cared a lot about winning this year. They expected to make a bowl, use progress as a recruiting springboard and build from there. There may not be much concern about losing casual fans, but UT cares very much about donor support.
I agree that they are concerned about donor support. Fulmer can sell the donors on what state the program was in when he/Pruitt took over without taking any blame from the past. What they're not concerned with is losing the casual fan. Those will jump back on as soon as significant progress is made.

I think they want to win. Pruitt will probably lose more this year than ever in his career before. That doesn't mean, to me at least, that winning is the top priority. He will sacrifice wins this year for future success. I think you saw coach Barnes employ a similar tactic when he took over... Play within the system, practice ethics, culture, and execution. It's easier to take a loss in basketball to prove your point though. Jmo

Would love to see that. Maybe then 85% of our completions won’t be screens or flares.

Those screens and flares were very effective against a defense determined to not give up the long ball. Except the ones that JG threw completely over Palmer's head. But 11-16 on 3rd downs I will take all day.

We could do that just as easily with JG against Charlotte. It wouldn't tell us anything other than our OL can hold up longer and our WRs can get better separation against a team like Charlotte.

At this point, we're better off worrying about the slaw we have on defense because that's what's going to get us killed against those teams. Mizz has no secondary but a nasty DL and a good RB, UK will run all over us, Vandy is Vandy but they've found an RB and we still can't stop a mediocre RB.

The most recent of which also hired Dooley and Butch. Assistants get hired for a lot of reasons.

Lol, big difference between working for Saban as a TE coach or an offensive analyst as compared to Defensive Coordinator. But you keep doing you. If all that negativity works, then go for it.

I think that’s correct and probably the right move - just wish they wouldn’t have wasted the scholarships on the grad transfers they brought in. If you’re acknowledging that winning isn’t priority number one and that development and recruiting is, we didn’t need those guys to tie up three scholarships.

Calculated gamble. When they did that I'm sure they didn't have the best analysis of the roster and culture within the program. I think things have changed a little since spring ball.

No sense in reaching on guys last minute that will tie up the scholarship for four years and probably won’t ever contribute.

Stanford is 105th in total offense. Let’s not act they are some juggernaut now. All we do is throw screens and underneath and will very occasionally throw up a 50-50 ball. I would rather have the guy that has the quicker clock operate this offense.

Maybe they weren't a juggernaut on offense because of the QB.

The QB that the Stanford coach got rid of.

The QB that the fans were excited to see leave.

The QB who our coaches have seen for fall camp plus 9 weeks of practice and continue to say "JG is our starter"

But please, carry on.

My final post on the real data that will apply to the schedule going forward. Based on Total D stats, our D will be ranked in a similar range as Vandy and Mizzou while being much worse than UK after yesterday's games. Our total O will be behind all of the others, although Mizzou has been trending down while their D has been trending up. They all have records and schedules that will give them reasonable shots to get to a bowl game. Blame it on strength of schedule or whatever, doesn't matter as they will get the extra 15 practices the Vols will miss if our guys don't step up a notch and beat them. We know what doing things the same way with some of the same players in key positions will provide, 4-8 and maybe 5-7.

None of us have any impact on what CJP does or who he plays where and when. However, fans/posters need to realize our O is dead last in the SEC in Total O. Helton did a remarkable job in dumbing down the O enough for JG to be serviceable yesterday to get 24 points on the board. But that was shut down in the last 20 minutes because USCe made better adjustments and Helton had nothing else he could do. When JG has to think or analyze what he sees, it's over.

As posted above, there is opportunity for that to change this week if KC starts. If he does well, he should start against UK. The O needs a lift and it is not getting it from the same guy that is leading it to last in offensive output in the SEC.

"We'da won state if only coach would put him in." - Hank Hill, to his Uncle Rico, probably

Stanford quarterback Keller Chryst is last among the 12 quarterbacks listed in the Pac-12 in passer efficiency. He has completed 52.1 percent of his passes, well below the accuracy of every other regular quarterback.

Chryst threw too long on four potential big plays, including two intended for Donald Stewart and one for tight end Kaden Smith. Chryst bounced a short one toward Trent Irwin, threw low on a swing pass that Bryce Love couldn’t handle and threw too low on a 15-yarder toward tight end Colby Parkinson.
Worst of all, he ended the final two possessions of the first half with turnovers. On a 3rd-and-12 play, he threw into a crowd and the resulting interception enabled the Aztecs to go just 15 yards for a touchdown. Then he failed to avoid a blitzing cornerback, who should have been blocked by Love, and lost the ball when he was sacked.
His final pass of the night was an underthrown deep try for J.J. Arcega-Whiteside that was intercepted in the final minute.

Chryst lost in his second straight start after winning in his first seven, but in truth, Stanford hasn’t beaten a team with a winning record under his guidance. Last year, Arizona, Oregon State, Oregon, Cal and Rice were well under .500. Stanford beat North Carolina in the Sun Bowl, but he was out after his knee injury in the second quarter. Stanford crushed Rice again in this year’s opener.

Try watching Stanford highlights. Had a better line and a better ground game. He is mediocre at best. There’s a reason his coach ran him off. There’s a reason why 9 weeks into the season, JG is playing ahead of him.
And it really seems like the hits are starting to take a toll on JG and affect his throwing. And the coaches still think he gives us a better chance to win.

I'm glad we have KC as a backup, but those who think he's a good QB are kidding themselves.

This is wrong thinking. I think it's more of Pruitt knows what he has with JG and he's afraid KC will be more of the same
