Why all the angst? — I get the disappointment in a three point loss when you held a 21-9 lead early in the third quarter, but I’ve been caught off guard by a lot of the waling and gnashing of teeth from fans in the aftermath of the South Carolina game.
Tennessee closed as a 10.5 point underdog on the road in Columbia against a South Carolina team coming off bye week. Tennessee is in its eighth game under Jeremy Pruitt who inherited a shell of a program thanks to Butch Jones. Will Muschamp is in year three of putting his program in place.
The Vols haven’t been able to run the ball on anyone, have had trouble protecting the quarterback and rolled into South Carolina with patchwork offensive line that ended up exceeding all but the wildest expectations.
Yes, that was a winnable game, but it would been a fairly large upset in the grand scheme of things, which is why some of the fan reaction to the loss has seemed over the top to me. We’re talking about a team that went 0-8 in the SEC last fall and didn’t exactly receive a massive infusion of talent in the offseason to change the look of the roster.
Again, I get the disappointment in not closing the deal with a 12 point lead in the third quarter. What I don’t get is people looking at a double-digit underdog losing on the road and somehow feeling that has provided immutable proof that this staff isn’t the answer.
Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, mine is if that’s yours, you’re extremely short sighted and prone to overreact.
