I'm stuck at work and all deadlines have been met, so here goes..
History lesson:
In 2010, Fulton, James, and Stone came in. In 2011, we signed Tiny, Marcus Jackson, and Alex Bullard transferred in from ND. Outside of Dallas Thomas, Jerrod Shaw, and Cody Pope (did he play?), these were wholesale changes to the OL.
With 2009 being somewhat of a 'control' year, we saw our RushO place 54th nationally at 157rypg. We placed 31st nationally with 18 sacks allowed on the year.
Then new coaches, and new players.
2010: start at least James and Stone, maybe Fulton too, along with Schofield? RushO: 105th (109rypg); SckAllwd: 116th (41)
2011: Tiny comes in at LT, Jackson and Bullard bolster depth, get another year for those 2010 freshmen. RushO: 116th (90rypg); SckAllwd: 34th (18)
2012: 2-deep is solidified. Major turn in the right direction. RushO: 62nd (160rypg); SckAllwd: 3rd (8)
2013: Same solid OL: Tiny, James, Bullard, Fulton, and Pair.. New system though, losses at QB and skill positions.. Cyclical dip, but still very serviceable. RushO: 44th (188rypg); SckAllwd: 12th (15)
So as a new staff (with competent offensive coaching at least) got their players signed starting in 2010, the OL took their lumps in Year 1, got better in pass protection Year 2, and really came together in Year 3.
Moving forward with this staff, we're taking a full string of linemen this year, maybe more. If we get Wanya AND Wright, they could start on Day 1 somewhere along the line. We still have pieces that I believe in-- Ryan Johnson and Drew Richmond, specifically. Kennedy, Chance, and surely someone else to round out the rest of the 8-deep. Plus a whole lot of experience and an extra off-season of S&C for the likes of Jahmir, Jerome, Niehaus, and Tatum.
Right now we're 100th nationally in Rush Offense and well, you see how dirty JG's jersey is every game. Maybe under this staff, the run game will take priority over pass-pro. Time will tell.. but I think based off of recent history (as flawed as that may be), 2020 may be the year big strides are made. Guarantano's senior season, actually!
