Ok, so I've got chili in the pressure cooker, so it's time to sit down for a few minutes and hash out all of my thoughts on the hire.
1. First of all, I remember when he coached the KY game, and how loose the team was, and how much fun they had. After the game, he genuinely seemed sorry to go and really seemed to like it here. How interesting, that Chaney will have worked for 3 of the last 4 Tennessee coaches.
2. Fun Offense: With all due respect to Debord's record setting offense, that final Chaney year with Bray, Hunter, and Patterson was a blast. SEC Championship caliber offense... not so much on defense.
3. We Hate Everyone: It's pretty true that fans hate their coordinators while they are still coaching at their school. Every wrong move is a reason to justify why the guy is an idiot. Chaney was not perfect. He can still tend to drop the running game a bit quick, though I imagine Pruitt will be quick to remind him of that. However, he also had poor talent at RB, and NFL talent spread across the hashes. I don't blame him for throwing it around the yard with Bray.
4. Stability wins: At a different time, and up and coming coach would have been great. However, these upward mobile guys don't do much to build the foundation of your program because they fly the coop so quick. It would not surprise me to see Chaney retire at Tennessee... provided he is up to the task. Someone like Lebby may be a 3 or a 10. That's the chance you take. With Chaney, you know what you are getting. IMO, he's a solid 7. With elite talent, that looks a lot better than a higher rated guy playing with lesser guys. Let's see where this takes us.
5. Quarterback's friend: With all due respect to Nathan Peterman, he was awful as a Vol, became a draftable player under Chaney, and was horrific as a pro. At the very least, Chaney knows how to get the most out of his QB and to hide deficiencies. Sure fooled Buffalo. JG, Shrout and Mauer are in very good hands here. The list of quarterbacks he can list off are going to boost recruiting, even if he's not a top shelf recruiter himself.
6. Give it to the play makers: If I'm Chaney, I sit down with Callaway and Jennings and pop in some tape of Rogers, Hunter and Patterson at UT. Sure... it's not either player's skill set, but it has to be exciting to see what he has done with former Vol greats. He has a knack for getting the ball to the guys that matter.
7. Drop a little lotta weight: No joking at all here. He really needs to lose some weight, because he's in a dangerous place. He had stomach reduction surgery in the past, so I wonder what in the world happened. I really hope he can get this manageable for the sake of his family.
That's more or less it. I give the hire a solid 7. Based on where we had gotten into the process (40 something days) and not making a lot of headway, plus dealing instability to a rival, it's more like a 8.5 in context.
