Also I think the DL will be fine, we're in a 3-4 and their responsibility isn't the same as a traditional 4-3 DL would be. We've got size and depth, as long as they can eat up blocks and not get pushed around to let the 4 LBs penetrate and make plays it'll be a solid effort.
Do we really have depth though, or do we just have bodies?

Harris, Bumphus, and Blakey all spent significant te playing on offense last year. Emerson and Garland spent all year on the scout team. Mincey played a little, but never more than 10-12 snaps in a game. Butler played less than Mincey and never made an impact.

I agree that our DL doesn’t have to be great to allow the LBs to make plays. Just holding their ground and eating blocks may be good enough this year, but Gooden is the only guy on the roster who was good enough at that to see the field very much last year. We may scrape together 4-5 guys who do their jobs pretty well or good enough, but there’s really no evidence to suggest we’ll be much deeper than that. Pretty much every DL on our roster comes with a lot of question marks. No sure things across the DL.

Serious question:

Which would you rather have, a first year offensive line or a first year defensive line? Florida may have 5 true freshmen in their offensive line 2-deep this year (and none of them are 5-stars) and will have at least 4 new starters on their offensive line compared to last year. Also of note they lost 7 of their top 8 offensive linemen from last year so any experience they have returning is against the defensive front of Idaho. I think the temperature is going to be on the rise in the swamp over the next couple years. Expectations are high and I don't see it panning out until they have enough time (3 years) to rebuild that offensive line. jmo.

Absolutely DL.

I'm no coach and I'm not gonna pretend to know the ins and outs of gap discipline, blocking schemes, whatever. But it's far more frequent that an true freshman DL (mostly DE) comes in and stacks stats than it is for a true freshman OL to come in and dominate.

I agree with this. I don't think I've ever seen a freshman OL come in and post 9 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss like freshman Derek Barnett did as a freshman DL.

Another good way to get sacks is too spend way too much on her birthday.

Thanks folks! I'm here all week! Please tip your waiter.

Mullen didn't take over for Butch Jones either. UF had an actual S&C program the four years preceding Mullen taking over. If Mullen had come to UT, he would not have been successful. Look at the retread coaches he brought in to coach UF. I'll take CJP and our present staff long term over any short term success Mullen might have had as a more experienced HC.

Y’all act like our players never even had a weight room until Pruitt got here lol.

I'll take a DL full of true freshman who are 4 & 5 stars over a OL full of all 5 star true freshman any day of the week.

HS weight rooms against a true high level D1 weight room is night and day. It's actually one reason I like the JUCO guys coming in on the DL, they're going to at least be a step or three ahead of HS guys with strength/size.

I think what hurt our players prior to Pruitt was the turnover in the S&C staff. I doubt Butch didn't have good coaches, but philosophy changes and new staff almost all 4 years is hard to return much from the work. If one guy focuses on Olympic lifting and explosive movement and the next guy wants to focus on compound lifts and static pulls you've essentially lost a year of development.

Just finished catching up on the last several pages. I have a couple comments on different topics:

2017 Florida team had about 8 to 10 players suspended due to the credit card scandal which played a big part in them only winning 4 games that year. Most of those players returned during 2018 for Mullen's 1st year.

IIRC, Barnett was not an EE. He created a lot of buzz soon after his freshman Fall practice began. The coaches knew he was very good pretty quickly. That said... this years DL is my biggest concern by far. Worst I have seen in about 10 years. Hopefully, Fitz works some magic in the off season or we may be in big trouble on the DL.

Anyone leaving the door open for Kaep to be considered "scum" just because he knelt in protest is bringing unwarranted validation to a very dumb and small-minded opinion, though.

And the triggered party during that fall-out were the "patriots" that were so "offended" that they "boycotted" the NFL. I put those words in quotes because all three are lies.
Perspective..

I think you bring up some good points. Do we have quality depth? Thats what separates the elite teams from the rest. Its not the quantity of depth, its the quality.
