I think you bring up some good points. Do we have quality depth? Thats what separates the elite teams from the rest. Its not the quantity of depth, its the quality.

My answer is no. I think we've got six or so guys on DL that we're hoping can perform. If one to three of Mincey, Butler, Emerson, Middleton, Williams, Solomon can't be relied on, we're going to have issues.

The only dude I'm sold on is Gooden.

Absolutely DL.

I'm no coach and I'm not gonna pretend to know the ins and outs of gap discipline, blocking schemes, whatever. But it's far more frequent that an true freshman DL (mostly DE) comes in and stacks stats than it is for a true freshman OL to come in and dominate.

Agree especially since the relationship with an OL coach is so important. A lot of times they are the ones installing the run games for teams. So many assignments on the OL.

I like our returning players on DL far more Than our LBs. I’ve seen enough of Kirkland, Bituli and don’t have much faith in JJ

I'm confused about your opinion of him. Are you saying you wish he was Vol?

Agreed. Granted, it’s not impossible for a team to get quality DL play with little depth. But it definitely makes the margin for error/injury much smaller.

Experience is much better at ILB than DL and you need fewer bodies, though.

Ignont and Bituli aren’t world beaters, but they’re not terrible, they’re known quantities, and they’re experienced. We bring in 2 highly regarded prospects there. We have a decent idea of what we’ll look like at ILB this year.


On DL, it’s basically Taylor, Gooden, and a bunch of question marks.
