Not sure how it’s a hot take considering Pruitt hasn’t accomplished half of what Mullen has as a HC and they were similar as coordinators. I like Pruitt so I’m not bashing but that’s just the facts
Well, 1st year as head coach, they have the exact same 5-7 record. Mullen was 9-4 in Yr2, let's see how Pruitt does.

IMO, UT fans set expectations too low. Many fans are happy with so much less than UT teams can achieve. The whole culture of UT has changed dramatically since the 90s. UT fans used to expect to win-- the entire sports world expected UT to win. And in the past two decades, it has become the opposite. UT fans think a great season is overachieving and a mediocre season is achieving the norm.
Come on man..BBVols ain't ever been expected to be anything. We have never accomplished anything much in BB.

I don’t know how you could gauge the difference in the time periods. We used to bisch about stuff at the barber shop, bar or in letters to the editor. Now it’s social media. Then as in now, fan expectations affected NOTHING on the field or court.

Mullen didn't take over for Butch Jones either. UF had an actual S&C program the four years preceding Mullen taking over. If Mullen had come to UT, he would not have been successful. Look at the retread coaches he brought in to coach UF. I'll take CJP and our present staff long term over any short term success Mullen might have had as a more experienced HC.

MoCo, I thought Lockwood had been there quite a few years. Wasn’t calling you out. I’m wondering if the problem is Holly’s coaching or her loyalty to her assistants that’s getting in her way. Honestly, I have no idea but am leaning towards loyalty.

Yeah and he had, it was weird though. He's not listed on the staff during Pat's last season, nor was he listed in her coaching tree on the wikipedia page for her...but then I did more digging and he's been there since 2004.

But Pat's last season to Holly's first season was a big overhaul. Dean and Elzy were the only two staff to carry over and then after Pat passed Elzy was gone too. Leaving only Dean from Pat's staff.

Also I think the DL will be fine, we're in a 3-4 and their responsibility isn't the same as a traditional 4-3 DL would be. We've got size and depth, as long as they can eat up blocks and not get pushed around to let the 4 LBs penetrate and make plays it'll be a solid effort.

Yeah, I don't think we'll be swiss cheese at DL, but I'm not super confident going into the season having to rely on multiple guys in our 2-deep being in their first year in the program. I have high hopes for Savion, and I think Gooden is pretty dang solid. I believe in the staff and their abilities to coach up a Mincey, Butler, and/or Emerson to get valuable PT out of them. I'm just tempering my expectations. It'll probably take a few games for them to hit their stride.

I was thinking he went to Michigan/Michigan St., somewhere like that, for a while.

I mean Gooden was 12th on the team in tackles(tied with Tuttle) and had as many for a loss (7.5) as Phillips. So he may not have been a starter, but by the numbers he was actually more productive than Tuttle.

Butler, Mincey, Bennett (since moved to LB) all saw action last season and return. So really the pressure in the passing game that Phillips was able to generate is the main area we'll need someone to step up. I am assuming we get Solomon this season, and I think him and Gooden can fill the roles of Tuttle/Alexis from last year.

So basically which guy(s) can step-up to help fill the void left by Kyle? Based on size I think Mincey, Bumphus and Butler as well as Harris (who sat out to RS last season) are possible options. Butler has played in the most games of those guys. Mincey has some in game experience as well. So we shall see, none of the 3 incoming appear to really be the pass rushing DE types Middleton could be I guess, he's got great length but I'm not sure how quick he is off the edge since he played interior in JUCO.

Serious question:

Which would you rather have, a first year offensive line or a first year defensive line? Florida may have 5 true freshmen in their offensive line 2-deep this year (and none of them are 5-stars) and will have at least 4 new starters on their offensive line compared to last year. Also of note they lost 7 of their top 8 offensive linemen from last year so any experience they have returning is against the defensive front of Idaho. I think the temperature is going to be on the rise in the swamp over the next couple years. Expectations are high and I don't see it panning out until they have enough time (3 years) to rebuild that offensive line. jmo.
