Unnecessary Roughness

Brandon: The epicenter of College Football on October 15, 2022 was Knoxville, Tennessee. When the clock hit 6:30, and it was tied 42-42, and they panned outside the stadium and the sunset was like this deep beautiful orange. That day was made to happen. Tennessee 52, Alabama 49. One of the great college football games in recent memory. This was a test moment for Tennessee. Can you pass this test? For 15 years you've lost to Alabama, for 15 years you've struggled to matter in the grand scheme of things. Well now, the story of the 2022 college football season will not be told without the Tennessee Volunteers. Whatever happens to them from now on will have a huge impact on the way this season shakes out. The Tennessee Volunteers, for the moment, are very, very back.

Kayce: I wouldn't even just say for the moment. I understand that they still have half a season left, and they still have to play Georgia, and we have to see what happens in the SEC East. Tennessee Football is back because now the narrative about what has happened for the last 15 years is dead. Josh Heupel was someone that everybody laughed at. Now this team looks like they actually believe that it could be 1998 again. They always say it, and people make fun of it, but the way that this team is playing and the way that the fans feel about this program right now, it actually feels legit that they feel they could be as good as they were in 1998.

Brandon: Several things about the Tennessee Volunteers. To me, it's not the fact that they won. I'm not just impressed that they won the football game, I'm impressed how they won the football game. First of all, they came out and stuck it to Alabama and got a lead. Even when they had that 28-10 lead, we knew Alabama was gonna bounce back, we knew Bryce Young was too good. We knew that they would get off of the mat, and they did. Alabama took the lead twice in the 3rd and 4th quarters, and there was a moment that it was 35-35, and Tennessee put the ball on the ground, and Alabama scored and that was it. Tennessee scored the last 10 points of the game. Tennessee had moments where it looked inevitable, Alabama was gonna win the game, Tennessee looked dead in the water. Hendon Hooker picked everybody up. Josh Heupel picked everybody up. They dusted themselves off and went and won a f*****g football game. The way they won it was more impressive than the fact that they won it.

Kayce: Agreed, and it also shows you how conditioned our brains are watching Alabama play. Because both times that they took the lead, everything looked right for them, and everyone is like ok here we go again. Everyone is like ok it's over. And Tennessee, down to the last minute of the football game, did not let that happen. Literally down to the last few football plays did not give up, and that's how it ended in regulation. When Alabama missed that field goal with however much time was left--

Brandon: Fifteen seconds!

Kayce: Hey you could have paid me all the money in the world and I woulda said this one's definitely going to overtime. There's no way Tennessee is going to finish this in regulation, ITS ALABAMA. And what did they do? Hendon Hooker led them down to kick a game winning field goal.

Brandon: That's one of the impressive things that is so impressive about Josh Heupel. They came to win this football game, they didn't come to have a nice day, they didn't come to get a moral victory. Nick Saban made the decision to kick a 51 yard field goal with 15 seconds left to win the game. A decision he had to make. But you missed it and left Tennessee with just enough time to get in field goal range and that's exactly what they did. Tennessee said "we are going to the house" and they had two long passes, got in range, kicked a 40 yard field goal, won the football game. That's what Hendon Hooker did, that's what Josh Heupel did, and that is a new day for Tennessee Football because they have gotten close to Alabama a few times, and we've seen Alabama get off the hook twice this season, against Texas and A&M. They didn't get off the hook here because Tennessee was not going to let it happen. Hendon Hooker. He's the great story. He is way near the top of the Heisman standings right now in my mind. He has been a godsend for Tennessee and he is one of the most important players in college football. He took his team by the boot straps and went and won a football game.

Kayce: he had such a great September, which feels like forever ago. He has continued to build on that. Its not just Hooker, but Hyatt. FIVE touchdowns.

Brandon: The man had SIX catches for five touchdowns.

Kayce: this Tennessee offense is so electric. It is across the board. Hendon Hooker is so much fun to watch. This game being 52-49 - points points points. That's another reason this game was so good. You see these instant classic games, the SEC games we grew up watching, it's a low scoring defensive battle. In this game you've got Hendon Hooker, is squarely at the top of the Heisman standings, you've got Bryce Young who is on the other side, the winner from last year. This is the best quarterback game in college football that I've seen in a really long time. Not only was it a really high scoring game, it was two really talented guys. The fact that we're talking about Hendon Hooker being compared to a Heisman trophy winner tells you everything you need to know about this Tennessee offense. They are unstoppable right now.

Brandon: Hendon Hooker stared down a Heisman winner, and he won the game. We also saw a reawakening of an entire fanbase. Tennessee has been beaten down. They were down just two short years ago. Now they've had Gameday twice this season, CBS was there today, we saw the big orange sunset, 102,000 people there standing there the whole time, crowd full. How many other big games did you look at this weekend and there were empty seats? Not in Neyland Stadium. It was the ultimate scene in college football. It brings me to the man of the hour. We talk about Hendon Hooker Heisman, Hyatt played great. Today was about Josh Heupel as much as it was about anybody. 18 short months ago Tennessee was in the wilderness. THey were floating up Tennessee River. They were not doing great. They got rid of Jeremy Pruitt, they had allegations, they had to get through ALL of this crap. And they went out, we were lead to believe that no coach would take the job, they "settle" for Josh Heupel is what everyone thought. Nobody was really impressed, including me. I laughed at them. They went out and got UCF's AD and UCF's coach? For Tennessee? A team that views themselves at the top? Well, guess what, ain't no idiot like me laughing now. 20 games into his tenure he's got them in the top 5, he's just delivered the biggest win there in two decades. They are squarely on the map, and Josh Heupel did it, no matter what idiots like me had to say.

Kayce: they did it so quickly. In 2020, we were sitting there making fun of Pruitt and McDonalds bags. And now you look at it and this is the guy that they feel can bring them back. I feel like they finally have the guy that they believe in.

Brandon: This is the only guy who has been able to do it. When a guy comes in, you get that new coach honeymoon. Heupel hasn't let it wear off. He took down Alabama, forever honeymoon. He did what Tennessee fans always said was possible. "Oh we'll be back" and everyone's like no you won't, no you won't, no you won't. Well, Josh Heupel delivered.

Kayce: Give him a lifetime contract.

Jack: This is their biggest win since... forever

[they all talk about the goalposts for a while]

Kayce: Incredible. This only happens in college football.

Brandon: Tennessee has put Alabama at a very interesting point. To me, what I saw Tennessee do to them, that's not Alabama.

[talk about how un-Alabama that Alabama looked]

Brandon: Well guys, I hope you're ready. Because we have unleashed the hell that is the Tennessee fanbase.

[later]

Brandon: Tennessee Football won the weekend. Specifically, Josh Heupel. I didn't believe in you, I kind of snickered when you were hired. I thought you were another in a long line. 18 months later I'm wrong. Tennessee is back. Tennessee 20 years ago was where Alabama is now, not for as long, but they were there. And they are back. You guys won the week.

Kayce: it's all Tennessee. I'm taking Hendon Hooker. He's so efficient. Look at the Heisman race. They won the game, he skyrocketed up the Heisman list. To me it is Stroud, Young, Hooker all at the top.

Katie: every bartender and bar owner in Knoxville had the night of their life.
Thanks for doing these. I dont listen to podcasts very often so these are really helpful.

I'm still taking in last night and trying to process it. The honest truth is I can't put it into words. Happiness, jubilation, overwhelming joy... I can't really find the words to exactly describe how I feel. But to finally be relevant again after so many years of not being relevant. Six years ago, I lost my dad, to the same disease I was fighting at the time. Five years ago, I almost died. I was knocking at death's door waiting on a liver transplant. Even my surgeon said he was surprised I made it. I was easily at my lowest point. So I was grasping for hope wherever I could find it, and Tennessee football has always been a passion. I wanted so bad for us to be good again, and for me to be alive to see it. Honestly, I didn't think I would. But now it's here, and I just have no real words to express what it means. It's just a game, but for some of us, it's come to mean so much more. I know outsiders would consider the passion strange, and unreasonable, and probably dumb, possibly insane. But I know at least some of you get it. I'm finally getting to see my Vols on top again. And it means so much to me. I don't care if people don't understand, or if they think it dumb. If I died right now, it would be with a smile on my face. Because the Vols being good makes me happy.

Split Zone Duo

Alex: One of the best Saturdays in quite some time.

Richard: Easily the game of the year, Tennessee 52, Alabama 49. We will not top this. This is the best college football game in some time. Absolute nails. This is why you watch this sport, for something like this.

Alex: For Tennessee, it's cool to see the plan work. They just won the game being Tennessee. Hyatt had 6 catches, 5 of them for TDs. This was in the ballpark of Michigan-Ohio State last year, though this was a far more entertaining game. There's this catharsis, this exorcism. After so many years of beating your head against the wall vs your rival. Alabama has been the hammer and Tennessee has been the nail. I like that Tennessee flopped around with this. It shouldn't have been easy. Why would it be easy? Why wouldn't the Volunteers drop an exchange on an option play and hand Alabama a free touchdown? Why not? You would not have expected this to be easy for them and I'm glad that it wasn't. It was fun. Tennessee is absolutely back, you can't be any more back than this. I don't care if they don't win the national title or the SEC. They are back and it's great.

Richard: It should be noted that in the 4th quarter, when it's time to cash the check, Tennessee is not afraid to run the ball. I am very impressed by Tennessee's offensive line. Very impressed by the defensive line. They got after Alabama. They really tried to exploit Alabama's pass pro. But as we know, you can move Young out of the pocket, but he is a 1 of 1 football player. He's unreal. But for Tennessee to take the PUNCH that Alabama delivered to them in the middle of this game. You're like oh this is classic Bama we've seen this movie before. Bama's winning. During that stretch it's like oh Tennessee is gonna blow this, Alabama is storming back. Tennessee took that punch, and was able to deliver another one back late in the 3rd quarter and in the 4th quarter. They hang in there and win this game.

Alex: One other thing about Tennessee sticking to what Tennessee does. You mentioned the OL. Coming into the game they were 17 of 17 for TDs in goal to go situations. That's the best you can be, and far better than anyone else in the country. Against Alabama they were 4 for 4. It's about finishing drives in college football. Tennessee finishes drives, it's what they do.

Richard: I do not know how that kick for Tennessee got over the goal post. But it did

I’m just checking in. Haven’t posted since my Alabama preview but I’ve been reading and liking a lot of what you guys have been writing. One thing I think more and more people are realizing is that this year we absolutely can TRUST our football team (coaches & players). That’s how much BVS has been cured. jmo.

I don’t have any real changes to my preseason Kentucky preview. I think everyone knows their strengths (none really) and weaknesses (everywhere) but none of the computer models see this as a toss-up game at the moment. We’re expected to win by multiple scores.

The greater the margin we beat Kentucky by the greater the likelihood the computers see our game with Georgia at Georgia as a toss-up. If the game in Athens was in Neyland all the computer models would already say it’s a toss-up, pretty much the same as Alabama.

All of our remaining opponents are projected to be multi-score wins for us. Only one possible toss-up remains. We’ve won all one-score games so far this year whether at home or on the road and the probability of us winning our last one this year on the road in Athens is increasing on a weekly basis.

11-1 is now our floor for the regular season; 15-0 is our ceiling for the year. jmo.

When we ventured into Death Valley it was assumed that LSU would have the home field advantage. It didn’t exactly work out that way. For much of the game folks on Bourbon Street in the French quarter of New Orleans could hear the lyrics of Rocky Top in the breeze blowing down from Baton Rouge. By the 4th quarter Tiger Stadium had a decided Tennessee home field advantage.

On November 5th we need as many Tennessee fans as we can get in Sanford stadium. If we have our fans with us our matchup with Georgia, according to the computers, moves into the pick ‘em category. If that is the case then with our coaches, with our players, and with our fans, I like our odds. jmo.

It would be best if we have so many fans in the stands in Athens that when Kirby looks around the stadium before kickoff he develops an acute case of Saban-esque anxiety. jmo.

If you have any doubt about the contribution of our fans to the outcome of our games, consider this, tonight on Vol Calls Heupel said the reason Alabama missed their field goal at the end of the game Saturday was because our fans blew it off course to the right. No, really. Everybody on the broadcast agreed. 👀
How many of us at home hehe a fan next to the tv like that video that was posted last week?

Neyland Stadium, it was the ultimate scene of college football 👊

It was actually ridiculous. UT had to try and track down all available footage from staff, media and fans to identify the throwers and ban them from the stadium, in addition to coming up with a formal plan to prevent future incidents. The amount of busywork and meaningless paperwork was supremely unappreciated by UT admin, especially the Chancellor (and I'm sure the interns).

It was complete BS. Just Sankey trying to show he's in charge. That said, he won't push us around when we're on top. ;)

The Audible

Bruce: Alabama went down in Knoxville by the Vols. Are you shocked, surprised, enthralled?

Stewart: Enthralled would be the world. That might be the most exciting regular season football game that I've seen since Bush Push (2005). I'm sure I'm forgetting something. There's the Kick Six. But everything that went into this game. If Tennessee had beat them 10-7 it would still be just as cathartic, when you've waited that long to beat your rival. But the nature of this game. This was an elite quarterback duel. That was Bryce Young's best game of his career. He consistently wowed me, like Manziel. And he LOST. For Alabama to give up 52 points, the most since 1907. You asked if I'm shocked, I'm not shocked that they lost but I'm shocked that they gave up 52 points. Their defense came in ranked number 1 or 2, and Hendon Hooker and Tennessee did whatever they wanted. Hyatt running wide open behind DBs, Alabama committing all these penalties.

Bruce: Gave up a lot of big plays. The Texas game, they probably should have lost. A&M game they didn't look well at all, but they didn't have Young. In this game they were just reeling. They looked like they did not have any answers for Hendon Hooker and that offense. Hyatt was the other big star of the weekend. You don't ever remember seeing a guy have a game like that, as a receiver -- Cedric Tillman, by the way, their big star receiver is out. I just thought that it was an amazing day in Knoxville. That fanbase has been through A LOT. For the last 15 years dating back to Fulmer, to Kiffin breaking their heart, to the disaster of Dooley, all the way through with Pruitt. RIght here I would say, when they hired Heupel, I was like eh, but maybe this is the best they could do. They had a Chancellor talking about the NCAA scandal and Level 1 violations. People at UCF were not sad to see Heupel go. But he has really lit a spark there, he's pushed a lot of the right buttons. Hendon Hooker - he left VT where they are horrific on offense and horrific in general, goes to Tennessee. They named a street after Tee and Peyton, they may need to start looking for another one for Hendon.

Stew: It's not like he played like this at VT. He was the starter, he was ok. Man what a difference a coach and a staff makes. I'm looking back, Heupel took over for Frost and had an undefeated season, then 10-3, then 6-4. Then Tennessee with what was oging on with Pruitt and Fulmer. They bring in their new AD and then he brings in Heupel. People were not jumping up and down saying great job. He has made them relevant nationally, they are in the college football playoff mix. Hendon Hooker I think is the Heisman frontrunner.

Bruce: He should be. He's my number one guy.

Stew: The way they won, Hooker getting them down the field to set up the game winning field goal.

[they talk about Saban and Bill O Brien getting outcoached down the stretch]

Bruce: That was about as entertaining start to finish of a football game as I've seen.

Stew: the botched handoff that Alabama runs in. And they STILL LOST. All credit to Tennessee. The resilience. How many times do you see a program like that, they get their hopes up just in time to get squashed. They did it. The goalposts. The cigar smoke. The fact that they played Dixieland Delight. The Alabama home game tradition. That came on while Heupel was doing his postgame interview, I'm like oh my goodness they went there. Everything that you love about college football all wrapped up in that game.

Thanks for doing these. I dont listen to podcasts very often so these are really helpful.

Man after listening to podcasts since 2010, and the come up of all these different sports and CFB podcasts during our worst era of football... it's just fun to hear them talk positively about us. And not have to hear how big of a circus we are with coaching searches, or embarrassing losses, or hear about all these other teams year over year rise and have a magical season.

I've waited a long time to hear these people announce our revival. I love it.

Hey does anyone know what happened with Pak (Kwuaze) Garland ? I remember he got hurt against Ball State. Haven't heard or seen anything else about him. Guess he got hurt pretty bad.

But it did and they win!
