No it wasn't an issue at TCU but I don't think he would be able to recruit fast enough players at Nebraska to run the defense that he wants. I agree that Patterson did not seem very engaged the last few seasons. It almost seemed like he realized that he had reached his peak at TCU and would never have a chance at a higher level of success.
There’s everything you need at that program to win. Moreso than at TCU. You just need the right guy. Not arguing that Patterson IS that guy. Even at his best, his heart was in Texas. That’s why in revisionist regret, Kiffin getting hired over him ranks low. Kyle Whittingham on the other hand…

I think Nebraska has everything needed to win except for a reliable recruiting base. They don't have any states in close proximity that produce lots of talent and there isn't much of a reason for Texas kids to go there now. Missouri kids are going to go to SEC teams or Texas/ Oklahoma who are coming to the SEC anyway. What recruiting base can Nebraska rely on? Chicago kids don't want to go live in the middle of corn fields. They end up going to Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State or Illinois. Heck, even Indiana.

Nebraska does have a history of pulling some kids from Florida and used to be able to recruit nationally but I just don't see that happening without landing a home run, big name hire and the odds of that happening seem pretty slim. What is the draw to Nebraska other than an easy path to the BIG championship game? But expansion is likely to change that.

The announcer just said nice reach around by Sanchez in this UNLV game. Made me chuckle.
Bruh you beat me to it I just popped back here to post that..."nice reacharound by Sanchez" 😂😅😭

You know he went to commercial like, "dangit Dave! You know you can't talk like you do at home while on-air!"

I know I've done that at work before.

Texas and California were their hunting grounds and they thrived. Just gotta build a program they want to play for.

They got Texas kids by telling them they could play a lot of games in Texas every year despite living in crappy Nebraska. Now they've got to tell them, "not only do you have to live in crappy Nebraska, but you'll have to play most of your games in even crappier places like Iowa, Ohio, Minnesota, etc..."

Lol, I used to work in an office with a bunch of older people and would chuckle when random things like that were said....always got funny looks.

I did an estimate for a 70 year old customer yesterday who is a Gameocks fan. I asked her what she thought of the vote to change the live mascots name. She died laughing when I told her that Cock Commander was in the lead.

That was the one thing that always stuck out. I remember at one of those camps the coaches ranked him pretty well, but then the players got to rank everyone and he was near last on their list, by his own peers.

Plus none of his own class teammates followed him.

Then there was the OL situation where everyone let him sit on the ground after he got sacked...
My person at the practices said that he was a weird guy and that his teammates didn’t particularly like him…. I’m not sure what he meant by weird…. It was definitely a let down but there was evidence that he wasn’t as good as we hoped before he got to campus…. Probably the reason that we were able to get him.

It’s a theory. I don’t remember which TEXAS teams were regular opponents during the Big 8 years. Somehow I think Tom Osbornes could draw them with the present alignment. Hire the right guy and watch the results. Players like to play and win. Do that and the player will flock…regardless of locale.

That was changing right before he come here…. Rumors/stories that scouts didn’t like him…. Chaney didn’t want him and such…..if Maurer wasn’t so mentally off then Harrison Bailey would have been running fourth on our depth chart.

Not being able to beat out JG2 should have made us all realize that Bailey peaked in HS and it was probably due to having multiple D1 level players around him. In the end, his game was just too slow in making reads, throwing motion and moving in the pocket to be a modern QB at a high level.

He probably should have picked Harbaugh and Michigan then.

There was the sort of play/offense HB needs. Just a slow developing play-action pass where he can make one read and just use him arm and touch.

Too much competition in much better places to live. Maybe this new TV deal will allow them to overpay a good coach and then have their boosters start a collective that overpays in NIL instead of donating to the athletic department. I don't know anything about what level of boosters they have, though. Corn money isn't the same as oil money. I just don't see many reasons for them to be more than an average program again.
