We really overstate how badly Milton actually played bc of the missed deep balls. Other than the run out of bounds at Ole Miss and the deep ball yips, he managed the offense fine. I would rather have Hooker back there, knowing what we know now, but literally everyone thet watched camp said Milton was the clear cut best option, and he didn’t play that badly when the lights came on (again other than his deep ball issues)
His "deep ball issues" absolutely sucked. And he did not just have "deep ball issues"...he also had bad issues seeing wide open guys.

The best 2 seasons I have seen were both 8-4. I will be building Heupel a statue if we go 9-3. I will be thrilled with 8-4. I am expecting 7-5 and will be slightly disappointed with 6-6. He inherited a dumpster fire, if we go 8-4 in year 2, then he has overachieved in his first 2 years.
2016 should be looked at as one of the most disappointing years in our wandering through the desert.

Back in the day 8-4 was a WTF season. This is the year we tell America we’re back. If you want recruiting to really take off, we need to be looking at a 10 win season (whether with bowl win or regular season, doesn’t matter).
If we go 8-4 we have lost to 2 of FL, LSU, and Pitt, or we’ve dropped a game to a KY or SC too.

losing to KY or SC would be embarrassing. We are far better than both. Adding rattler did not even SC up with us. That game was over after the first quarter last year

why should we lose to 2 of Pitt, Fl, and LSU? I could see LSU because they still have talent and it’s a home game for them. But this is year 1 and they were atrocious last year. This is Fl with a year 1 staff. And Pitt lost everyone who made them good last year.

have we improved? Do we really have a legit QB and coaching staff? Then we should not lose to 2 of those 3 games.

Of course I want recruiting to take off. Of course I want to be back to the 90s. Of course I want 9-10 wins and excited it’s a possibility. But we’ve not even seen them play yet! We only have some comments from press and staff.

What is their son being convicted of at the moment? So sort of a weird statement. Hate that it’s come to that for his family. There is no privacy when you are high profile.
He has been convicted in the media…. The guy from pro football focus writes a new story on how awful he is every day…. They are right…. We have only heard the females version of events…. Nothing from the other side or the police investigation.

We also have common sense and numbers. Successful programs always make their biggest jumps in year 2 (just as teams make their biggest jump between games 1 and 2). We have more depth, more talent, and more players on roster.

Look at Heups demeanor in his presser today vs last year. That’s a quietly confident guy.

I deleted my comment. I don’t want to drag this on. Horrible story. Or a horrible misunderstanding. Or a horrible fabrication. What’s fair is completely subjective and not something you can win on the internet. Either way I just don’t want to waste any more brain activity to this. Snap and clear. Tennessee football is on the horizon… 🏈

We have to reset our standards of success as fans
I think the standard is the same as it's always been as far as what this program should be about in terms of being championship caliber.

However, year to year expectations should be based on what that team is actually capable of.

This year...I think 8-4 is probably about right. But I wouldn't be shocked at all at 9-3. 7-5 would be total meh. 6-6 is wtf.

5 games... UF, PITT, LSU, UK, USCe. 3-2 probably gets us 8-4. 3 of those games are before the halfway point so we won't have to wait long. September is gonna be big. 🍊🍊🍊

I think that’s a very level headed approach. I think this year is Tennesee’s Covid year (vs last year for most teams nationwide). That’s our advantage i think.

Here’s where I am:
Almost entirely intact coaching staff has another year with the team
Deeper across the board in all positions with experience and talent. Remember our scholarship numbers.
Heisman candidate QB
1st team all sec preseason WR
Arguably weaker schedule this year

…and we’re picking 1 more win than last year, or even the same?

I’m calling Bullshi+. It’s time to start believing we are for real and if we as a program are going to take the next step, 8-4 is not the answer.
Everyone is discounting that we're still short players and it's only year 2. I think we're capable of winning them all, but realistically, 7-5 would be the base. 8-4, 9-3 is a good year. 10-2 is phenomenal. Anything more is miraculous.

Not to mention we were a couple of bad breaks (bad 3rd down call/overthrow Joe against Pitt, strip sack against Ole Miss/muffed punt, Wright’s TD they wasnt against Purdue) from winning 9 games last year.

I don’t have a set win- loss record….. I think how the wins and losses happen… means more than anything.

I’d be incredibly disappointed with 6-6 with what we have on offense especially
I'd be disappointed @ 6-6. I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be disappointed @ 7-5, but I think that's where year 2 expectations should be, considering nothing more than where we were when Heupel got here and where we wanted to be in y2.
