9-2 and only held 4 teams to less than 24 points all season.

Tim Banks is the problem, he's the leader of the defense. Kentucky & Akron are the only teams the defense held under 300 total yards

Also Spurrier lost by 42 to TN in his first season (held to just 3 points on offense). Got beat by 24 against Miss State in his 3rd year (only scored 6). Lost by 38 to Nebraska in 95 with a national title on the line (gave up 62). Lost by 27 to Bama in the 99 SEC Title game (held to 7 points). Lost by 39 to Auburn in 2010 when he got South Carolina to the SEC Title game (only scored 17). Lost by 33 in the swamp with a 1 loss SC team playing for Atlanta in the 2012 season (only scored 11 on offense).

Steve Spurrier was a great coach and most of those loses were confusing. Some games you expected it could happen, but to lose them as badly as they did was surprising. If you're the type of coach that puts a ton of points on the board when things go sideways teams are going to try and put a beating on you.

It sucks, the team should have been playing like it mattered because it did. The only way they were going to lose the CFP is if they got beat maybe that was just too much pressure.
Tim Banks is horrible and has been since last year. He didn’t deserve this job and offenses feast on us each week. It’s embarrassing.

The horse is out of the barn now.

UT raised and extended the entire staff last summer. Nobody's contract will be up this year.

I know Banks was looking for a HC job after last season, I'm sure that'll be the case this off season too and unlike fans I think most potential landing jobs won't be hung up on just last night's performance. Hopefully Heupel & DW can help Banks find a HC opportunity to make things a bit less expensive.

1 game and people went from "GIVE THE WHOLE STAFF LIFETIME EXTENSIONS"

to

"FAHR HALF THE STAFF"

The Bassmaster Emotional Wave Effect 😆

They want to throw out the baby with the bath water. We have some really "smart" fans---------I can guarantee you that 100% of our fans would have taken 9-2 at the start of the season and been very happy. The carrot that was dangled in front of us last night was just too big. Our best football is still ahead of us. Stay the sourse and stay strong for the Vols.

UT needs to fix its issues. Not a quick fix, but can't let it snowball. Not really CJH's strength but he's the HC and he'd better find a way.
Not sure if you're talking coaching issues or player issues, but we can't keep playing defense with the idea that we just stop the other team once or twice and outscore them. We need real defense. And our DBs need to learn how to cover receivers.

Extensions don't mean anything. Tennessee can afford to make defensive staff changes. Heupel is near the bottom of the SEC in pay, so I would imagine the overall staffs salary is the same.

Yeah, sadly I think the offense demoralizing teams was more of the success for the improved numbers on defense this year than Banks figuring things out.

We probably should have known Franklin DC's are just riding his coattail. Also Big 10 is a terrible conference to pull them from since the vast majority of offenses in that league are stuck in the past and suck ass.

I think the passive approach would have worked, and UT would have been able to make staff changes without terminations. That scenario hit a speedbump. Banks will be raised to $1.5MM, and while the spin is he's been tasked with doing a lot with too little, it's a bigger issue than that. He's at UT through 2024 unless he finds something else or CJH pushes a buyout.

I'm sour because of how badly we lost and to who it was. But in no way am I going to beat the drum about Heupel, this team, or DW in any way.

9-2 with 2 games left in year 2 after the decade plus we've experience is a win in my book. Our talent gap on defense hasn't closed enough and Banks' dumbass apparently didn't hire any good player developers and he doesn't have a clue how to play call around our lack of talent. Our best positional coach (RG) was on staff before Banks was announced.

I still am "in" on BJM though. Because what he's manages to get out of Banks, Beasley, Page III, and Mitchell has been pretty impressive none of them would be starters at ILB for any other CFP teams. But he's not recruited as well as I hoped he would.

Tim Banks, Mike Eckler and Willie Martinez have done very little it seems. Willie at least has been recruiting though, but in year 2 we still don't have anyone in the secondary that can seem to cover.

Banks is getting a RAISE?!

What are the criteria for NY6. Is it a certain finish in the CFP poll or do the bowls themselves pretty much decide?

There have been defensive issues all year, but when it came down to it, our coaches made adjustments and put our players in a position to win. We've played well above our potential based on pure talent and depth. This game wasn't about talent. There were bad coaching adjustments, but that's not the part that I'm most angry about. It was the lazy attitude of much of the defense the entire game.

The result tonight was a defense that quit. It was clear from the first drive of the first quarter. Players had angles on tackles and would miss or give up on the play. The defensive speed we've played with this year was largely missing as we seemed to be playing in slow motion. It's frustrating to see players jogging around at less than 100% while a play is still happening, and there was a lot of that tonight through the entire game. If there are players who don't want to give their all out on the field, we can give opportunities to the players behind them on the depth chart.

Watching this game, before I had read about the J Banks rumors, it looked like there was some kind of team drama/issues on defense. We played a bad game at Georgia, but I never felt like the team quit. We had quitters on the team out on the field tonight. Ultimately, it comes back on the coaching staff who are getting paid to lead the program, and if the team plays bad, lazy, and uninspired ball, that comes back on the coaches. Hoping we can stop this early and bounce back. This next game against Vandy is going to be important in seeing which direction this team and staff decide to take.

Maybe just me but part of it seemed to be the field. Guys were afraid to go 100% in that sludge they call a field. Like playing in quicksand. Did we even pack cleats for such a disastrous field? Didn't seem like it.
