Wasn't the point. We have players seeking raises or threatening to walk, then belittle guys in the portal looking for a good payday and say they wouldn't "fit" here. We already have the same type here. And yet, somehow, they're a fit, despite chasing the almighty dollar.Yes I’m aware we are paying players
Baron made a mistake. He focused on the short term and the NIL vs the long term and the NFL. Can't serve 2 masters. Hope he gets his head on straight and gets his game/development back on course, but so far, it's not looking so promising.
We will be much better….Lally helps a lot plus a lot of young talent EEsEnd of the day, as long as the secondary plays better next year, none of this matters. Obviously, they saw it was a weakness. They've attempted to address it. Whether the improvement comes from guys already there, or from freshmen, or players added after Spring (if that happens), as long as there is improvement, that's all that matters. If we don't see improvement, then we have a problem.
We will not overpay what our people think a player is worth...so we will lose these deals for these sort of recruits to OSU/USC sort of schools everytime...period. You might as well get used to that fact.*Disclaimer - The opinion I'm about to state will be unpopular with some of you. Feel free to disagree with me in a respectful manner.
We struggle with portal recruiting. We don't suck at it, but we don't seem to be able to close on highly sought after players. Last year it was Verse. This year, it's Igbinosun. We can fill needs with adequate players, but when it comes to the portal, the big names seem to be just out of our reach. The possible exception being WR. But we could probably turn our waterboy into a stud WR. That's just how good Heupel is at offense.
I wasn't calling Jeudy-Lally loyal. I was talking about guys already on the team that we recruited out of high school who have stuck around to be developed and earn their spot. It can't be good to upset those guys by paying some dude more who hasn't proven themselves on this team.I hope Jeudy-Lally comes in and is a difference maker, but you talk about being "loyal" then cite a guy who is coming to his third program. Sadly, this is what college football is becoming in the NIL era. And the guys who display the most talent, who make impacts on the field, they'll have the opportunity to make the most money. Will that piss off teammates? Probably, but if they want in on the action, they'll have to up their performances as well. It's no different than the NFL where not everyone is paid the same.
And I'm not arguing for Igbinosun here. That ship has sailed. What I'm saying is big name talent will expect to be paid, and some of that talent will be worth it. So, for us to sit here and poo-poo that as "unfair" or "detrimental to the team", to try and claim some moral high ground, it's kind of ludicrous. This is what NIL has created. And it's okay to hate the new system, but if our ultimate goal is to be champions, which it should be, then we either adjust or accept we'll never quite reach that level. And given the choice, I'd rather adjust to the new system, because I want to see Tennessee win a National Championship again. Every fan should, IMO.
One last note, if another established school, like an Ohio State, had offered Jeudy-Lally a more lucrative NIL deal, I doubt he would be here either. Again, this is the system NIL has created. And without set guidelines, it's probably only going to get worse.
SameI see your argument I really do, but this seems to be the grade an example of someone Heupel doesn’t want in the program. I understand doing it in high school but ghosting the school again to go visit different schools and using us as a backup plan doesn’t fly with me. Once again I see your argument but I care to disagree
My biggest counterpoint would be our coaches actually talked to him (which neither of us has done I'm assuming) and decided he would be a fit. So, their read on him was he'd be fine in this locker room. It's the players we choose not to pursue that I assume they don't see as fits.I wasn't calling Jeudy-Lally loyal. In the sense of Jeudy-Lally, I was talking about a guy who didn't make a show of it all, talked to some schools, made some visits, made a decision and stuck to it. That's not what this kid has done, now twice in two years. Jeudy-Lally transferred from Vandy, I assume, after Mason was fired. He did his time at BYU and got his degree and is now a grad transfer. Igbosun (sp?) did one year at Ole Miss and now wants more money. I don't mind kids transferring. I don't mind them taking the highest bidder either. But I don't like leading programs along and milking everyone and all that. I'm not calling the kid a cancer or a headcase either, I just don't like how he's handled himself twice. And I would assume that mentality would be a difficult one to manage in the locker room and there could be severe negative consequences for team chemistry if you overpay.
I get being concerned about not getting all the bigger transfers, but not lamenting it or forecasting failure because of it. At the end of the day we don't fully know what falls apart with some of these kids because we aren't in those conversation. All that matters is that we are winning football games with the players we do have.
I agree, but I'd caveat with, "He fits at a certain price $$$ point." And maybe they're willing to pay more for guys who they believe are better team fits vs talent alone. That's why they're willing to have a bidding war for a guy like Nico or Bru, but not for Zach Evans or this kid? Idk. I think we've beat the horse. My biggest counterpoint would be our coaches actually talked to him (which neither of us has done I'm assuming) and decided he would be a fit. My guess is we're done until the Spring window. We'll see who leaves, and who might enter in the Spring window.I agree, but I'd caveat with, "He fits at a certain price $$$ point." So who are we going to target now?
