If you are talking about DW hiring CJH, that was not a crapshoot. That was DW’s plan all along. He knew what CJH was capable of doing. He just had to go through the motions of looking for a “big name “ to satisfy the masses, then went and got his first choice.

Now no one should doubt any hire that either of them supports.

If you are talking about hiring DW, don’t think that was a crapshoot either.
Hiring coaches is always a crapshoot...we got lucky and hit on the right guys. I don't really buy the "it was DWs plan along"...I suspect that is a little revisionism or wishful thinking going on to make us trust DW and feel more secure in his leadership. I do think he is a really good AD whether he got lucky or not with the chain of events leading to hiring JH..
so I trust him to do a good job.

I hope I am wrong about all that, but it doesn't really matter if I am or not, because since we did end up with the right guys at AD and HC, I really don't care if it was luck or not.

If...big GIANT IF...he had hired Franklin....I was done until they were both gone. I wouldn't have been happy with TE either, but I would have hung around and gave him a chance.

I have no great advice here but I'm going through similar circumstances with a senior dog we adopted with a not-so-great heart and I totally feel you. I wish you and your dog all the best man. Keep us (me) updated on how everything goes, I'm certainly pulling for you both.

Edit: Not exactly on topic, but with the boom of pets adopted in 2020-2021, I think there is going to be a huge demand for vet services. We may already be seeing it now.
100%

The Blue Pearl referral I got from our vet was still a 4 week wait. Every other vet oncologist was 2 months minimum. We're on a waiting list for 3 other recommended ones locally, 160th in line is our best position out of all of those. Crazy.

Try to find a vet that does alternative medicine. Our family dog was diagnosed with cancer and we were told 1-3 months, 3-6 if we did chemo/radiation. Got a second opinion, found a vet that prescribed a Chinese herb blend (very inexpensive) and we just put her down a little over a year after her diagnosis.

Not a bad idea at all. I've kind of come around to the fact that we may just be in "keep him comfortable for as long as possible." Researching local vets to see what my options are. Thanks

He'd fight like hell to keep me healthy if it were the other way around, so I jumped into aggressive treatment headfirst. I feel like they're taking advantage of my optimism and giving me too many maybe's to trust that approach anymore.

Very sorry to hear this. My heart goes out to you. We had a German Shepherd when I was a kid who got arthritis in his back legs so badly he couldn't get up. We had to carry him home and get something to put him "to sleep." I still remember it so clearly. It is hard to have no good choices. Our two year old GSD that wifey and have now is so precious to us. I don't know how I could stand news like you just got. Sorry about the vet situation too, of course. You will be in my thoughts.

People, never take your pets for granted.

He's actually a GSD, 9yo

What kind of cancer does he have?

started out as a tumor on one of his anal glands (expressing/maintaining those has always been a problem for him). started aggressive chemo treatment to see if we could shrink the tumor enough for surgery. did another ultrasound this week and that original tumor has remained the same size, and the cancer has spread to one of his lymph nodes. the dr said "we can start a newer kind of chemo with greater frequency and track it every other week (aka expensive ultrasounds and blood tests)"

I'm just not going to put him through that

I think you're onto something.

But I'd also add he clearly prefers offensive bighitters. Not just Heupel, but the Kansas coach too and Oats in basketball. He has a great eye. I think his mind is in the right place and some good luck was sprinkled on top for sure.

I think many of us were optimistic once we dove into his actual recruiting and insane offensive output...but I also think we'd all be disingenuous if we said we expected 11-2 in Y2 😳😳 Damn even typing that didn't feel real. He skipped right past that elusive 10 win season for an 11 one 😆

That's hard, man.

Do you know the name of the type of cancer?
