After more than 20 years in the Negro Leagues, pitcher Satchel Paige became the oldest player to debut in the major leagues when he relieved Cleveland Indians starter Bob Lemon in the fourth inning of a 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Browns at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Paige was 42 years and two days old.
