Is it? Those guys were throwing max 85-90, probably fastballs only. Playing a bunch of guys that would be ok high school pitchers in todays game. Babe had power but his form was crap. Now you have guys throwing 2 seamer, 4 seamers, curves, sliders, drop balls, change-ups and sidearm at 90 mph average around the league. Multiple guys topping 103.

Plus, he didn’t play against the best of the best, it was the best of the white guys.

Ruth swung sitting fastball every pitch. Swinging like a 4 year old boy. Today he’d be a guy that would be playing slow pitch softball hitting it a country mile.

Stupid you don’t have the mind to think things through.
Doug Atkins played in a bygone era. Never would have been able to compete vs today’s tempo and schemes. Sorry if you’re too stupid to think things through.

Read an interesting article (not to do with Ruth or that era) about speed guns. It all has to do with where the gun reads the pitch, as it comes out faster than when it hits the glove, by as much as 7-10%.

Article said when Nolan Ryan was throwing 100 in the late 70s, it may have been more like 108-109 mph as recorded today 😵‍💫
Yep. The technology today can pick up the ball as soon as it leaves the pitcher’s hand. When it is at its peak velocity.

Nolan Ryan would be lighting up radar guns even more in today’s game.

So would Walter Johnson - one of those “high school” level pitchers from that earlier era.

You should be honored to be included with royalty.

@drvenner is just jealous that I have an Inskip Grill and he doesn't.
Pfft, royalty??? I’m sure that’s what you tell yourself every night when you look in the bathroom mirror while applying polident to your dentures. (🤬, I had to google polident).

Doug atkins didn’t play in the 1920’s. Sorry if you’re too stupid to realize that the the athletes of the 1920’s don’t match up with the athletes in the 1960’s. Just like the athletes in the 1960’s don’t match up with the athletes in todays games.

I’m desperate. I will take that little bit.
One thing I've noticed about Heup -- and I think it's smart -- is that he doesn't try to "win" fall camp. We've had some guys who seemed like they were all about puffy media stories preseason. I think Heup is all business. It's one reason that more of practice is closed now.

Athletic ability in general improves with every generation. I guess you think you’ve made a point stating a universally known truth.

Great players transcend generations. Let’s try another one.

Reggie White played in the early 80’s, an era of inferior athletes compared to the current generation. No way he could compete in today’s era of tempo and scheme.

I know. I would like something every now and then though. 😂

Babe Ruth knocked himself unconscious on a stadium wall in 1924 | For The Win

A better question is….. would todays players be tough enough to play in the 1920’s?

Babe was knocked unconscious and finished a double header… an Indians player was struck by lightning… woke up and finished the game.

There would be no jet travel.
No whirlpool baths after the game.
No special diet regimen
No special training equipment to help with your game.
Baseball wasn’t protecting the players…. Getting hit, spiked, ran over was considered part of the game.

Today…. Some players sit out due to sleeping under an air conditioner wrong.

Doug Atkins was a genetic freak. I met him in 1986, he would have been 56 years old. He is to this day one of the largest people I have ever met. 6 ft 8 inches and played at 257 lbs. With today’s training and nutrition for athletes, he would most definitely be a star. He might not be a HOF player today, but he would be an impact player.

Oh, this is great!
