Kicking Cobb off that team days before our game at Alabama cost us the chance to play for the national championship that year (1989). The entire team looked like they were in shock.
Bama then lost to Auburn, Auburn lost to us and to Florida St. (out of conference); so we three tied as SEC co-champs. But the Sugar Bowl picked Bama to represent the SEC, and Bama proceeded to lose to Miami there, and to end the season with two consecutive losses. We won the Cotton Bowl, and ended with the same best in football 11-1 record as Miami, who was voted national champs. Miami might have been favored if we had been chosen for the Sugar Bowl, but they were overwhelming favorites in 1985, and we know how that turned out!
The loss of Cobb and also the timing was horrible.
